In the LDDB, it is stated "mono - dubbed version" - in Japanese? In "American" English rather than Australian?

Regarding the roadshow re-release in 2000, I'd be extremely surprised if it wasn't presented in 5.1. That's not to say it wasn't shown in theatres without digital capabilities which would have defaulted to the optical SVA track. Besides, it's commonplace to refer to all multi-channel formats as 'stereo' within the theatrical exhibition chain.
Chace Digital were producing 5.1 upmixes from mono way before 2000, The Evil Dead was re-released on laserdisc with 5.1 AC-3 in 1998!

Roadshow was 5.1, it seems the US MGM release had a limited release in stereo at first, according to MMM. They wrote it at the time, so I assume they are right.

In 2016 I have found this site, MM 35mm screening,

So guys we have some brand new exciting events here.
Thanks to Mr Brown, who acted upon the info given, we are now in possession of the Roadshow DTS Australian only remix mentioned in post #1, from the R4 DVD. Before we opened this thread, there was this only one post mentioning the existence of this on a Blu-ray forum, and not even the MadMaxMovies fanpage mentioned it. The poster was indeed right, and Roadshow did a complete major overaul of the 5.1 mix for their DVD release, which is Australian exclusive only. I opened both the MGM 5.1 remix and the Roadshow 5.1 remix in Audacity. I can confirm they are both completely different, with the waves not matching at all. Both tracks use the same formula, and are based on the same stems. They use the M&E stems to widen the soundstage, with a complete mono version being in the center channel, and the same extra sound effects are added to beef up the sound. However MGM previleges the center channel, whereas Roadshow as the sound maximized up to 0db in the fronts, making the dialogue come from all three fronts, which is less noticeable on the MGM. Roadshow is superior to the MGM in every way, and the infamous Johnny The Boy missing line in the end scene is restored here on that remix. I was hoping maybe the Roadshow center channel could be the mono mix intact, and could be extracted and use on it's own. Alas is has the new foleys added there too. So we will sync and add this to this release as an extra, as I'm sure all you punters will approve that this is the best option if you wanna hear the film in 5.1 channels.  Btw What about to Upscale Warner DVD in the same way like PDB is doing for other films? |
