[Proposal] Mad max (1979) audio preserv
#21
Mr Brown that guy talked about Grease, not Mad Max LOL. On that forum, they speak of movies inside the threads of other movies, to the point it becomes confusing.

Yes, we need a VHS with twin tracks ie stereo. Then it might by chance be both tracks of an optical print, rather than a fold down.

I think if that Widescreen Pal UK VHS isn't stereo, then it's done. We don't have other alternatives.

In my opinion, any mono track from the 60's on needs to be captured in stereo. Why, because to make the mono sound good, the mixer always EQ each track differently, so that dialogue & effects and music sound clearer and better.

If you fold them down, you destroy the different EQ on each side, blending it all into a mush.

It's different from songs and records, where the mono songs would go to one track only on the records.

So in essence, any Mono mix Stereo on LD, that is folded to 1.0, is NOT the way it was intended.

The sleeve says "stereo", on the disc is printed "mono", and it is listed as mono on lddb.com and also on ofdb.de.
I assume the stereo print on its sleeve is just an error.

as I answered you, (but the Forum put my answer to this BEFORE your post):
It is listed as mono on ofdb.de, also there is said, that besides the "Stereo" on the backcover, the disc itself has a "mono" printed.

So, I assume that the backside is wrong. Won't be the first time that there were false details on a cover.

Not that I won't buys it, if I see it cheap enough, just to confirm.

also, it is possible that Germany never had it in Stereo. On ofdb.de the Theatrical release is listed to be Mono, too.
But, as with every user-info based Database, no proof and no guarantee given.

This is fantastic news. I've long tried to find out more information for MM but have gotten stymied since there is little out there to go on and all the video editions are foreign older ones to work from for new sources.

I think you're on the right track Stamper. If nothing else comes to light I'm at least super excited to see a differently colored version with whichever best sounding Aussie mono is out there. I've been sticking to my R1 MGM DVD all these years and I'm sad to think that even it doesn't have the proper mono.

How does the R1 SE DVD compare to the earlier DVDs in terms of color?  It certainly looks different from the BDs.

Jonno, could you check if this tape has stereo channels? No indication on the sleeves.

Give me til the weekend and I'll try and get it captured.

IMHO the BD screenshot seen following the link shows a clear example of a regrade - note the green "blobs" on the sky!

(and, I do like much more the DVD colors, by the way!)

The R1 SE DVD is a cross between the Warner and the Blu-ray discs.

It certainly looks better than the Blu-rays, but it's already off when compared to the Warner.

I saw this film first on video, then on screen in theaters several times, I'm guessing about 5 to 10 times as I loved experiencing it in widescreen rather than Pan & Scan.

The Warner correspond to what I saw, the film never looked different to me on video until the SE, and then the Blu-ray were issued.

When I had the Pal Widescreen tape, which looks pretty much like the Warner DVD, still the same, for me it was the film without major regrade.
