Batman 1989 4K
Would the difference between 23.976fps and 24fps cause sync issues or is it negligible?
Finest kind.

Yeah that definitely leads to a desync but you can convert 23.976 fps audio to 24 fps by changing the sample rate to 48048 Hz and resampling back to 48000 Hz. Vice versa, you can sync 24 fps audio to 23.976 by setting the sample rate to ~47952 Hz and then resampling up to 48000 Hz.

You should contribute first, before asking to get stuff. Just saying  Dodgy

Sorry if it came off as rude. I don't know what I have to contribute to anything. I guess I'll just stick to the blu-ray.com forums and pray WB wakes up and decides to update the boxset with the original audio. After speaking with them twice I know they're aware of the fan's passion for it.

Good day

I'm a bit late to the party here, but with Superman (78) and the Batmans released on UHD, it's like a dream come true!!!   Smile

I think Warner Bros. has done a fantastic job with these movies, but the thing that saddens me is the lack of the original mixes.

And in that regard, all the fantastic info and work done by the fine folks here is like a beacon of hope (pun intended Tongue ).

So, just to confirm with more the versed members here, the DTHD tracks from the original Blu-rays for Batman (89) and Batman Returns (92), both need a -167ms to mux with the UHD?

Bronan,

Congratulations on your work with LD syncs!!! The JP LD Dolby Surround should be quite something!!!

BTW, I understand from the thread that you're working on Batman Returns. Is that track also from the JP LD?

It would be great to have a comparison with the LD tracks just like for the first movie, since it's been been confirmed that they are different for Batman (89), and supeirior on the JP disc.

BTW, is there any love for Batman & Robin (1997)?

I think it's a very fun movie, like a spiritual sequel to the 60'ies show, and the UHD is out of this world!!! Just fantastic PQ, a world of beauty!!!

I muxed the original BD DTHD track and it seems to be in perfect sync. but does anyone know if it's indeed the original mix?

It would be awesome to know how it compares to the LD DD 5.1 and PCM Dolby Surround

ps: Forever is the only one I'm actually not into and it's the weaker of the UHDs IMO.

This is probably answered, but has anyone compared the 5.1 of returns from the old flipper disc to the 2005 mix. I remember the difference in sub activity between the mixes was much different. should have held onto the old flipper.

I added the flipper audio for all four to the audio page. The flipper discs were largely based around the LD masters with 89 and Returns getting freshened up a bit with lovely early DVD era issues but a sound bump to 5.1. 89 flipper audio is the bassier LD/VHS mix. Returns seems like it was perhaps boosted in volume on the 2005 DVD and of course DTS DVD tracks have to be level matched to Dolby tracks as they are mastered louder. Otherwise the 1997 and 2005 audio seems similar IIRC.

I came around after time to simply go with B&R. I don't mind it anymore and try to laugh with it and its studio-imposed madness. It gets a bad rap for the wrong reasons and has one truly good scene in it. (Bruce and Alfred on Alfred's sickbed) The whole production team essentially got screwed by Warner into making this film as a rush job and to meet certain demands and were then thrown to the wolves when it didn't work.
As for Forever-I will always love and defend this film and post about it everywhere. The original cut was never shown as intended and I even started another petition on petition.org for WB to release the original edit. But even in the release version there is good material in there if you're willing to work with the film. It was supposed to be a direct sequel to Returns and started life that way in the original Batchler script. For the best representation of how the film should have been and then a whole lot of even better additional material get a copy of Peter David's novelization.
(Of course I have the novel tie in for 89, Returns, Forever, B&R and Begins. They're all good for different reasons. 89 is well written with additional scenes cut from the film, Forever is amazing, and Begins was written by Dennis O'Neil and is so much better than the film it hurts.)

BF has a better mixed 2.0 surround track as are some other mid 90's Warner titles for some reason. It's a reference LD. B&R is also a great LD if you find a non-rotter and it too has a really strong 2.0 surround track though the differences between it and the 5.1 are much slighter.

The new 4Ks for each are good and better then the BDs-especially on Forever-but the remixes annoy me since they are minor but still change enough to infuriate me. I saw both of these on original run as a kid and still remember people walking out of the theater during B&R opening week while the movie was still going.

Of all the random films i bought on laser-disc in my foolishness a decade ago I never bought the batman's. Wishing I had bought them now. Is the old dvd 5.1 audio pretty much the dolby surround pcm ran through a 5.1 decoder then? Being as they're identical minus the encoding.

The 97 DVD 5.1 is essentially the same as the LD tracks but:
89 is discrete on the dvd
Returns may be the original DD theatrical audio 5.1 mix. The 2.0 is only on the LD and VHS.
Forever has a better sounding 2.0 mix only on LD and the ac3 is still very good but the DVD sounds the same as the LD version.
Ditto on B&R.

I've upped all the 1997 dvd audio tracks in the audio section.

Congrats! I hope you enjoy it! It's like reading the best Batman film we've never gotten.
All four novelizations have nice bits even B&R.
