In my opinion using a re-encoded source defeats the whole object of a preservation and I am totally against it. The cropping to me is a non issue, and if there is a few scenes where it is, then a regrained Sky capture will suffice. I'm going to get a giganews trial now to see how I go with the canal+ original capture.

You shouldn't discount a re-encoded capture on principle of the fact that it's re-encoded. One should actually look at the source to judge its viability. In this case, even the re-encoded Canal+ looks far superior to the Sky HD and is apparently very close to the WOWOW. To disregard such a good source purely because one doesn't like the idea of a re-encoded capture is unnecessarily limiting the potential of the project.
That brachiosaur shot pretty much confirms to my mind that open-matte is the best way to go. But if the WOWOW is to be used then I would rather have the cropping than added 'slices'.

Yes, the WOWOW is a great idea (especially as long as we don't have the original Canal+ encode). Holy shit, I had no idea the BD was so cropped on the right side. Why does the framing keep getting tighter and tighter on this movie? The laserdisc was wide open and it was 1.85:1. I saw the 3D in a theater and it looked almost claustrophobic at times.
I still hope X5gb is able to get the original Canal+, just out of curiosity and to see how it stacks up against the WOWOW.

Agreed, as IMHO we can't judge the Canal+ version based on a re-encode and the original will show the "true" quality of that source. Really hope someone pulls it, as even with the long retention on giganews, we are rapidly approaching that post becoming too old to be pulled anywhere.
