In my opinion using a re-encoded source defeats the whole object of a preservation and I am totally against it. The cropping to me is a non issue, and if there is a few scenes where it is, then a regrained Sky capture will suffice. I'm going to get a giganews trial now to see how I go with the canal+ original capture.

You shouldn't discount a re-encoded capture on principle of the fact that it's re-encoded. One should actually look at the source to judge its viability. In this case, even the re-encoded Canal+ looks far superior to the Sky HD and is apparently very close to the WOWOW. To disregard such a good source purely because one doesn't like the idea of a re-encoded capture is unnecessarily limiting the potential of the project.
That brachiosaur shot pretty much confirms to my mind that open-matte is the best way to go. But if the WOWOW is to be used then I would rather have the cropping than added 'slices'.

I've been looking at that brachiosaur shot more closely and it seems the WOWOW is definitely less cropped than the BD:

This shot also shows that is has more visible film grain than the Canal+. So I'm going change what I said previously about the open-matte Canal+ being my preferred source. I think the WOWOW's minimal cropping looks perfectly acceptable and the additional grain gives it the edge over all other sources.
My (hopefully final) opinion is that a preservation should use the WOWOW video, graded using the 3DBD as a reference and with hard-coded subtitles removed but no other digital tweaking.
Anybody agree with this?

Yes, the WOWOW is a great idea (especially as long as we don't have the original Canal+ encode). Holy shit, I had no idea the BD was so cropped on the right side. Why does the framing keep getting tighter and tighter on this movie? The laserdisc was wide open and it was 1.85:1. I saw the 3D in a theater and it looked almost claustrophobic at times.
I still hope X5gb is able to get the original Canal+, just out of curiosity and to see how it stacks up against the WOWOW.

Agreed, as IMHO we can't judge the Canal+ version based on a re-encode and the original will show the "true" quality of that source. Really hope someone pulls it, as even with the long retention on giganews, we are rapidly approaching that post becoming too old to be pulled anywhere.

Glad that everyone is seeing the light and starting to agree with me that the Wowow is the best source, (outside of the slight macroblocking and interlace artifact subs), once you've seen it, nothing else compares, even the Canal+.

Finally I found a GREAT method to get both the open matte and the OAR in the same file/Blu-ray disc, without doubling the space needed for each version... read this thread for more info, and download the clip (which is, of course, from Jurassic Park)!
Some technical details: I took the Canal+ version and regraded it using WOWOW as reference, overlaid the WOWOW to it, leaving the top and bottom "slices" of the regraded Canal+; if you select the non subs (using VLC) before 10 seconds from the starts, you will see two small black bars that will cover the Canal+ slices, leaving the WOWOW intact!!!
Waiting for your feedbacks!!!

Waiting for your feedbacks!!! Sounds good spoRv as along as the detail/grain of the Wowow is left intact. Only thing, you say the subtitle feature only works with VLC (which isn't the best of players), unfortunately I use Mpc-Be (Madvr+Lav+Custom Settings) which is the best htpc combo, so this feature won't work. Also your write up mentions ff/rw doesn't work, does that mean I can't use a mouse to move the cursor along the timeline.

As my projects are released as BD, I'm working on this new method to let it work as a BD; I use only VLC and MPC as video players, but I'm quite sure there are some other players which will work as well.
ff/rw works but you'll lose the OAR and return to open matte version - I'm trying to find a way to avoid this, but still got no luck until now...

At least your trying to get it to work, worst comes to worst surely you could release a two Bluray set. One with this feature which sounds cool along with been able to use it as an open matte and second disc as plain OAR.
