[In progress] TERMINATOR 2 Blu-ray regrade to 35mm
#31
@bendermac, yes, it's the random.next one based on the 2017 remaster disaster plus open matte DVD upscaled, color matched to the 2017 grading but shifted towards blue, and the corner are "blurry painted" to fill the blanks. You can find it in Russia just like I did. It's watchable as a bonus, but since it's based on 2017, it looks all fake, digital, smooth, plastic, waxy, etc.

@Beber man, for a second I thought this was real. I mean it's not impossible since many Cameron movies have been released in Open Matte by Streaming Services and/or HDTV Channels. But maybe there is the real deal available.

@bendermac, argh, he didn't even open it for the 3D treatment unlike what he did for Titanic for some reason!

I just got the 2160p 35mm scan from Russia, which is Rob's print scan but with additional work done to it, notably the grading which is a bit different. I don't know if it's native 2160p or upscaled from 1080p though. Except for some scenes that look too dark and too green at the beginning, it might be an even better reference. I went to my go-to shot in the steel factory to see how yellow it is, and it is better than the too orangy shot on Rob's version of that scan. And it looks very clean, except for the occasional dirt and scratches, even more at reel changes obviously. Plus the Russians made it in sync framewise to the 2015 Blu-ray, except they made it at true 24fps. (The funny thing is, the other day, I did just like the Russians with Rob's scan to make it in sync with the Blu-ray and cropped it while at it to have a nice rectangle framing at 2.40:1) So if you change the framerate of that Russian video to 23.976, you're in sync with the Blu-ray. That means it's compatible with the CDS mix we already have for instance. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't just work on that instead of the dated Blu-ray master. I'll have to watch it entirely projected to really see what's what.

I'm surprised no one used AI to repaint those corners. I mean it's a slam dunk.

That’s what I suggested in random.next’s thread after I saw a Youtube video that expanded 4:3 TV shows to 16:9 using AI to extrapolate left and right. Surely it would be easier and faster for an AI to create just the corners.

I saw that video and I really wasn't impressed with what was there, in 10 years maybe but we are still in the hours spent fixing junk phase

25 minutes and 22 seconds today. I squished it to 2.39:1 as I read the master was stretched. It kind of looks like it was. The time travelling sphere and the policeman's flashlight do look more round when squished to 2.39:1. What do you guys think? The 35mm scan is definitely more squished than the Blu-ray master but that doesn't necessarily means its geometry was done right.

This is where it's at for now: 28 minutes, 32 seconds, so the hallway shootout and fight. @thisdoesnothelpourmission, since you just recently saw a 70mm print, what do you think? It's mostly the daylight exterior shots I wonder about, and how warm they should look depending on the scene location. I can provide a soundless review copy of these 28 minutes and a half for anyone willing to review it. Of course reviews from people with actual knowledge of the 1991 look are prefered.

My thought is that the compass HUD overlay in that tiny bit of the imagery should be able to allow you to nail the ar, the distance of the compass lines should (surely) be the same vertically and horizontally, right? Your image in post #38 above, far right, 11th image down has the compass overlay I'm talking about. I threw a square around the vert+horiz lines of the compass and got the width a tad more than the height, but the resolution is very low when pulling a frame from that jpeg.  Maybe your full-res version has the vertical and horizontal almost the same in 2.39:1? ... or?
