Proposal: The James Cameron Project
I know the extended version of The Abyss was created by Cameron using his own money. I wonder if it was done in standard definition, like the Star Trek Motion Picture Director's Cut.
If so, that might be some of what he is 'changing'.

The SE of The Abyss was finished on film and got a 35mm theatrical release. The quality of the material shouldn't be a problem provided it's all been archived correctly, coming out after T2 the additional VFX should if anything be better than the other VFX in the TC

its done, they showed it at BeyondFest. No one said anything about those extra scenes looking bad or in SD.

The Special Edition was released in 1992, the laserdisc box set was the following year.

Uh I think both the LD and the cinema release came out at the same time.
I remember already owning the LD, and going to the cinema to see it.

Something to ponder, as there was talk about it in the shoutbox...
I don't think there will be any revisions to the footage in True Lies, because I think JC does not care about this film.
So I don't expect to see stuntmen faces replacements, and other stuff, on the final disc.

I distinctly remember watching the Abyss SE on Cinemax in March of 1995. I paid for a few nights of cable just so I could record it onto a VHS. It was my first date w/ a girl and I got into a major car accident a few nights later..she was angry I didn't call her back for a sec date until she found out I was in the hospital!
So, I wonder what additional work was done in 2008
