On the one hand, HDR can be greatly beneficial (even in stills photography, try pulling off taking pics in a sun-dappled interior of a forest, with a low DR sensor you are in trouble, etc. etc.) but I do feel like they often over cook it for UHD releases, especially for stuff not shot as HDR (but even new stuff at times, gets way over-hyped up). And a lot of film was not shot with the idea that it would ever have bright parts getting really bright. Often you have lights or the sun or a bright window in a frame, often all in the same spot of focus as a main character, or very close, and when you dial those up, it can mask the main character or appear piercing to the eye. Also they often forget to raise back up upper shadows and mids and just leave them unnatrually dark (as they had to do when making SDR to fit in highlights better) and then just boost highlights like crazy and it looks really unnatural and it is hard on the eyes. And then, movies often jump from a bright outdoors scene to a dark cave or whatnot, just like that, in the real world you'd stand around a bit and let your eye adjust to each new scenario, but with movie timing, there is no time for that, so having it blast max brightness out and then boom goes to a super dark scene and then after a long time boom to super bright and then boom to dark and boom to bright, if you fully use HDR, it can be a bit rough, the movie was not filmed/edited with the expectation between such extreme differences in brightness to be seen on screen.

Carefully done, it can look fantastic and add a lot though.

the lack of SDR backwards compatibility has definitely put a damper on my plans to upgrade to 4K (both display and source wise). the only things ive seen which attempt to do this are HLG which i havent seen being used by any content and one of the DV profiles which again i havent seen being used. ngl i just dont understand why the ppl making the standards didnt seem think of backwards compatibility at all.

Have it down to two final general calibration candidates. Been busy and had to deal with various things, but project still proceeding and getting near to the able to start producing results stage.

The first actual video sample has been uploaded.
It is 4k wide gamut SDR in HDR wrapper for better compatibility highbitrate HEVC demo with no audio. It does not use the final calibration (although it is at least in the ballpark) and is just a quick test. It has no audio. It is (a non-super wide) open matte sample for a couple minutes or so in the middle or Reel 3.

A sample isn't going to be posted here? Seems like a great way to show off what this actually looks like and drum up more donations.

I'm not 100% if links to videos are allowed to be directly posted on this site or not. Granted this is just a couple minute fragment with no audio (and I actually do see similar on Youtube even), so maybe it is OK? I'm just playing it safe here though. If anyone wants a look at the little demo video PM me.
