HDTV and Web-DL Preservation Project
#1
Recently I have been trying to get my files organized at home. That's coming after I lost a lot of files in a HDD crash. As I've been going through some video files I've found some HDTV rips and iTunes downloads that don't corresponded with their Blu-ray counterparts. So my first thought was about preserving and upgrading these files. The problem is a lot of these files are small and have a lot of issues like pixilation, compression artifacts, EE, etc. So end results may vary.

My goal is to clean up as best I can, the digital artifacts, possibly upscale and preserve these files with their existing colors. Maybe adding some audio files I can.

This is (randomly) what I have found in my collection so far that I believe are unique transfers:

2010 (same colors as the DVD, different colors compared to the BD) - Done
20000 Leagues Under The Sea (different transfer compared to the BD?)
Alien (different colors compared to the BD/UHD, probably a 1999 era Japanese transfer)
Aliens (different colors compared to the BD, probably a Quad era transfer, overmatted to 1.77 with more picture)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (different colors compared to the BD)
Dial M for Murder (1.33 Version)
Duel (1.33 Version)
Doc Hollywood (different colors compared to the BD)
Foreign Correspondent (from Criterion but a pre-restoration transfer)
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (different colors compared to the BD)
From Russia with Love (different colors compared to the BD)
Goldfinger (different colors compared to the BD)
Gunga Din  (Not on BD?)
Highlander (a semi-US theatrical cut)
His Girl Friday (different transfer compared to the BD)
Horror of Dracula (different colors compared to the BD? Not sure)
In the Mouth of Madness (different colors compared to the NL BD and I believe the Shout BD) - Done
K2  (Not on BD?)
Krull (same colors as the DVD, different colors compared to the BD)
Lawrence of Arabia (same colors as the DVD, different from the BD/UHD)
Panic Room (2.35 Version) - Done
Slaughterhouse-Five (different transfer compared to the Arrow BD?)
Saving Private Ryan (different colors compared to the DVD and BD)
Star Trek Movies (the Sky transfers)
The Blue Max  (different transfer compared to the BD)
Two Mules for Sister Sara (different colors compared to the BD)
Zodiac Theatrical Cut

Glad to see someone preserve these. There's probably a lot of value in these HDTV rips and they often get overlooked.

Are the Bond rips the same Lowry restorations just with different colors?

Some interesting films there PDB. So Aliens is a different master to the WOWOW?
The Saving Private Ryan HDTV should also be interesting, it was always claimed the DVD was from a silver print. I think Film4 may have broadcast this master in the past.
I don't suppose you have the old Bram Stoker's Dracula HDTV cap, ie the one based on the Superbit master?

The Bond ones have dirt and hairs so I don't think they are the Lowry restorations. I assume they would of removed all that.

I only compared FRWL so far and its appears overall greener then the official BD.

Yeah, I think Aliens is a different master then the WOWOW. The WOWOW seems to be based on the 99 DVD transfer. This looks similar to the Quad DVD era. I've seen it many times before but at the correct 1.85. This file at 1.77 seems to be the largest amount of info I've seen. Often more info on 3 sides (but not always). You can see the edges of some SFX shots like the Sulaco arriving at LV-426.

Sadly it has some awful pixel breakup in spots, particularly in the "red room" gunfight.

I'll try to get pics from Russia, Aliens and SPR for you guys later today when I'm home.

I looked all over for the Dracula file when you posted earlier about it Zoidberg. Sadly, no dice. I would love a copy also.

That's fascinating, the only other Bonds I knew of were the 4Ks on iTunes - which seem to be the Lowry scans but with more authentic colours

That would be great. Would be fun to see if there are some good projects there.

And as promised here are some pics of the requested and random others:

DMFM 1.33

Aliens

and here is an example of the picture being over-matted and bad pixilation

Over-matted (which I will probably crop)

Pixilation

Probably going to have to replace all those shots if I work on this.

First movie I'm trying is In The Mouth of Madness. It does seem to be a different transfer when compared to the New Line BD and Shout BD. Maybe the same as the DVD but I don't have that around to compare. I chose that one because it has some of the worse EE I've seen since Tremors and I have to do extra work to get rid of that on top of the compression issues.

And here is me trying to mitigate it (can't eliminated it)

Vudu has Sleepers (1996) in the old DVD transfer (different than the BD which the Cinemax WEB-DL uses) and is 1.78:1 Open Matte. Also has original Warner and Polygram logos intact unlike the Cinemax WEB and BDs.

How do you do the shots that take a random snap at set times? Is it a VLC thing?
