[Proposal] Disney Animations Regrain

So, you know how Disney effectively release imitations of their animated features on Blu-ray? (see here) I've thought about it, and it's like... the damage is done at this point, you know? But there is a chance that some of the DNR can be reversed by adding fine grain to the transfer. If not, it'd at least restore that filmic look.

Would you say this looks about right?

Of course, this'd only really work for titles that aren't over-processed.

I'm never against adding grain, it can only help a film and in Snow Whites case, it did. It just looks so much better now.

If only Snowwhite and the other disney films looked like that!
As much better as it seems, it won't be the same like looking at the original negative.

i wouldn't bet on it. These disney restorations change the colors significantly to appeal to this generation.
one striking example is the greys in Alice in Wonderland which turned to purple.

Looks like a good project to me. Adding grain can only help.

That's a good point. We might be able to get film cel scans and use them as a reference to regrading those scenes. Or whichever medium is closest to those colours.

While I'm at it, I've made up a list of things that can be done.

• Snow White: Regrade to 35mm film scans where possible.
  
• Pinocchio: Regrade to 1987 CAV Laserdisc.
  
• Fantasia: Restore Deems Taylor. Possibly restore Pastoral Symphony segment if possible.
  
• Dumbo: Regrade to 1982 Laserdisc. May need to check lighting.
  
• Bambi: Regrade to 1990 Laserdisc. Restore original RKO logo.
  

Unfortunately anything from Cinderella onwards will need much more work. Reversing DNR and digital alterations, all that. If HDTV sources exist from before those, that will be a massive help.
