Sony PSP UMD movie discs

We had a thread about this on the old site many moons back. At least one movie, Casino Royale, was confirmed to have had it's mattes opened up for the Playstation Portable's 16:9 screen. Not sure if there are others.

Has anyone here ever tinkered with UMD discs?

I thought any UMD movie was available in other format, but I'm curious if someone will be able to find a way to rip an UMD movie!

If they can't be "ripped" directly from the disc (like an iso) then I'm sure they could be captured via the same cables you use to plug the PSP into a TV

EDIT: not sure, since it's SONY, whether there is any copy-protection there that would make that difficult. I know it's possible to capture stuff from UMD, because years ago I had a copy of some film that a friend gave me... but it was years ago and I don't even remember the title...

There are no exclusives, AFAIK. What interests me is open matte (yet 16:9) versions of movies that never appeared elsewhere.

Wouldn't the "open-matte" constitute "exclusive," if they are only on UMD?

Yep, exclusive version at least... and IIRC there was a technique to actually rip an UMD (not capture) but I'm not completely sure about this...

Seems that an open matte version of Casino Royale was broadcast on HDTV; now, finding it it's another matter...

Good luck with that. Makes sense though. I would find it rather bizarre if UMD does actually have exclusive open matte transfers that haven't at least been broadcast on tv...
