  Aliens NTSC Laserdisc
Posted by: Nfsfan83 - 2020-09-15, 06:55 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (1)

Guys, You are experts in Laserdisc so:

Two things:

1. Am I right that raw video on Laserdisc is somethimes better than DVD, example Aliens SE on my DVD PAL looks like someone use a little dnr to smooth video in comparsion to Laserdisc raw mpeg2:

here is a little sample in mp4 h264 from Aliens UK PAL LDRip

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gcY3Lju...sp=sharing

I add polish voice acting Smile for my friends.

Also I made quick comparsion LD vs DVD:

I love these colors and contrast Smile

2. Where I can find in net Aliens Special Edition NTSC LDRip in Mpeg2, or Theatrical? I think colors are these same in both version. Widescreen will be nice.

I live in Poland problem is availability of Laserdisc, not to mention ripping Sad So I ask You for help.

  Adding chapters to MKV's
Posted by: Hitcher - 2020-09-15, 10:32 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (3)

I'm converting some 00000.m2ts files from BluRay rips into MKV's using MKVToolNix but it doesn't work with the chapters.txt files so I can preserve them. Is there a way to convert them for use in MKVToolNix or alternatively is there another way to convert the rips to MKV's and keep the chapters?

Thanks.

Video PHASE IV (1974) w/ original ending
Posted by: The Griff - 2020-09-14, 04:46 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (10)

Hey hey.

Some of you might know that 101 put out a Region B blu ray of PHASE IV in the UK recently that included director Saul Bass' original extending ending (that was finally rediscovered about 10 years ago) as an extra. Unfortunately there is no option to watch it as part of the main feature so... I did what had to be done.

I essentially ditched the last reel of the movie and cut in exactly where the extended clip starts. While the majority of the extra stuff takes place in the final montage, there were enough extra little bits and pieces to make it worth swapping out the entire reel.

Videos were trimmed and merged with TMPGEnc smart encoder (so no re-encoding), the English SDH subs were converted to SRT and similarly merged, the original chapter points preserved (because there were only like 5 or 6 anyway), the audio commentary was jettisoned (for obvious reasons) and the whole lot was spat out as a BDMV folder using TSMuxer.

Oh yeah, and I kept the vintage closing Paramount logo from the theatrical ending.

Sorry folks, no fancy menus.

Even though the movie now runs longer, the file size is slightly smaller due to the extra compression they laid on the extended ending. The only way around that would be to get the French disc with the more generous bitrate on the original ending but that has Dolby Digital audio instead of LPCM and, well... life's too short.

Anyway, if anyone is keen to field test it for me, hit me up with a PM. I've got an MKV in the making but I thought I'd get this uploading before I turned in for the night. I'm on CDT (Cool Dude Time) so hopefully I'll get back to anyone who might be interested in about 8 hours. EDIT: The BDMV is now available.

Cheers!

Psycho 4K UHD "original" mono audio
Posted by: Turisu - 2020-09-14, 10:57 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (16)

Reports are coming in that the track labelled as "original mono audio" on the new Psycho UHD is just a folddown of the surround remix with new added sound effects and other issues.

Fortunately the mono audio on the German Turbine BD is the original and syncs perfectly to the UHD uncut version of the movie with a delay of +667ms. Smile

What software to use for this quick/simple job?
Posted by: The Griff - 2020-09-14, 04:15 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (3)

Hey gang,

I've got a really simple project I wanna do but haven't done any video editing for years.

I want to take the main feature off a blu ray, trim the ending and then graft on the original extended ending that is available as an extra.

A/V stats are the same (1080p, ~24fps, LPCM).

Ultimately, I'd like to output the final product as an mkv with no re-encoding (although minimal re-encoding at the splice point would be tolerable).

Any suggestions for all-in-one free or trial software with a minimal learning curve to do this? I already have both clips demuxed and ready to go.

Cheers!

Dracula (1979) original Dolby Stereo track preservation
Posted by: Onti - 2020-09-13, 07:25 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (12)

Blu-ray.com:

Scream supplies the film's original Dolby Stereo as the default (and only) track on both discs: a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo (1614 kbps, 24-bit) on Disc One and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo (1646 kbps, 24-bit) on Disc Two.

The Shout Factory (Scream) release contains two different cuts: theatrical and desaturated (both, 2.0 stereo mix) but Laserdisc 4.0?

https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/03235/41057/Dracula

How can that difference be possible? What is the real original Dolby stereo track? I was wondering if it would be nice to have a preservation with the LD track.

  Eraserhead LD PCM mono track
Posted by: Onti - 2020-09-13, 02:34 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (14)

The movie was originally released with a mono mix, but blu-rays only features stereo tracks (and Criterion has missing shots).

https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/27679/NDH-101/Eraserhead

Anyone have the Eraserhead laserdisc and can capture the audio to obtain the PCM mono track?

I'd like to sync the original LD audio to the Capelight blu-ray. If you can capture the video as well, this would help syncing a lot.

Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Posted by: alleycat - 2020-09-10, 03:11 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (23)

Hi All,

I don't suppose anyone has the blu ray of Lock Stock from either Hong Kong, Japan, Scandinavia or Thailand? Every other release uses VC1 but those releases use AVC.

I'm planning a reconstruction of the director's cut using the blu ray and the extra scenes from the DVD, plus the color grading from the DVD.

Also what are people's thoughts on the level of grain in the blu ray - see below? Would you leave it as is or try and remove a little? I read it was shot on 16mm and blown up to 35mm so I guess it will never look great.

Thanks
