Odd Aspect Ratio - stretch video?
Posted by: alleycat - 2020-12-08, 10:41 PM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (14)

Hi All,

This was supposed to be another relatively simple webrip project. As you can see from the screenshots below whoever made the video has cropped it to 1920x816 (i.e. 2:35:1) which is the correct aspect. However when they did it they left some black bar at the top and a little bit at the bottom. I've played around, after cropping this off it changes it to 1920x775 which makes the aspect ratio approx 2:47:1.

So I then took the exact same shot from the DVD, cropped off the matte, resized it and laid it over the shot from the webrip - there is nothing missing from the webrip - perhaps a pixel from the bottom but nothing from the top. So it's pretty much got the same amount of picture but it's in the wrong aspect ratio.

So I'm thinking whoever made it cropped it wrong, then encoded it to 1920x816 and as a result the video has been slightly squashed. So I'm thinking my next step is to crop off the bits of black, which takes it down to 1920x775, then resize it back to 1920x816 and finally matte it back to 1920x1080. That will restore the correct aspect ratio and will be blu ray compliant.

Do you follow this logic or would you go about it differently?

Thanks

Do you lose EX when editing 5.1EX?
Posted by: allldu - 2020-12-08, 10:30 PM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (13)

Maybe a dumb question here...  If I want to edit the 5.1EX DD (first coverting it to wav files), will I lose EX after I render it out as 5.1 pcm when done? I guess you don't since the EX is encoded into the rear surrounds with an algorithm. Or am I wrong?

List of BDs sourced 16/35mm theatrical prints
Posted by: SpaceBlackKnight - 2020-12-08, 08:38 AM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (8)

I imagine there's quite a ton of them out there, mainly more obscure and cult films. Though here's some off the top of my head:

Snappy Video BD of Dracula and His Vampire Bride.

Dark Star (Bryanston Pictures logo suggests a faded 35mm blowup print was used and then sandblasted with degraining).

The Last Valley (IP was in abysmal shape and Kino reportedly used two different 35mm prints, one from the BFI and another being Joe Dante's personal copy).

Umbrella BD of Body Melt (their 4k transfer was based on a battered 35mm Aussie release print that rights holder Beyond Entertainment had. Vinegar Syndrome later found the 16mm OCN somewhere in Canada and did a 2k scan/restoration of that. Their transfer was used on the VS Blu as well as the UK/German BDs).

The Man From Hong Kong.

Japanese Extended cut of Police Story (found on the Eureka UK Blu as an extra).

Hong Kong theatrical cut of Police Story II (found on the Criterion Collection Blu as an extra).

The Leg Fighters.

Dynamo, known as Bu Ze Shou Duan (both HK and shorter cuts are sourced from a combination of various theatrical prints and one loaned from Quentin Tarantino's personal collection).

Japanese extended cut of Heart of the Dragon, titled The First Mission (can be seen in it's entirety on the Japanese Shochiku Blu. Note the UK 88 Films Blu has this version reconstructed with bulk coming from Fortune Star remastered footage of the HK theatrical cut).

Japanese extended cuts of Fists of Fury, Way of the Dragon, and Game of Death (the former two are only complete on the Japanese BDs as extras, while the US Shout Factory Blus have the latter in full as an extra).

German BD of The Reflecting Skin (comes from German dubbed and localized 35mm theatrical print).

German BD of One Eyed Jacks (WARNING: horrible PAL DVD upscale from battered French theatrical print).

  Legend Ultimate Edition DVD
Posted by: allldu - 2020-12-06, 01:21 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Guys, anybody have the Ultimate Edition DVD of Legend in their posession and would be kind to share at least captured audio from it? I had it once and when switching to HD sold it (stupid me!), and now it costs fortune on eBay..! But it has the surround audio for the Director's Cut, which I assume was taken straight from the answer print, which I'd really like to have.

  Christmas Titles Available to Sync
Posted by: spaceboy710 - 2020-12-06, 05:15 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (17)

In preparation for Christmas, I went on a laserdisc buying rampage. I grabbed as many copies of Christmas films as I could and have been capturing like mad.

All of these audio captures are available. Nothing is synced and I currently don't have video captures of any.

Everything is either analog 96/32 or bit-perfect PCM. For the ones with multiple different pressings, I haven't done much comparing and contrasting. Feel free to request individual captures or I can just send you a ZIP file with everything and you can decide what is the best. Smile

Any way to test an audio file for resampling/bit-depth conversion?
Posted by: BusterD - 2020-12-04, 10:02 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (5)

Like the title says, I'd like to test some audio files to make sure they are actually 24-bit/96kHz and haven't been upsampled/converted by Windows or the recording software. Pretty sure I have everything set up now for correctly capturing audio at 24/96 (Audacity is set to WASAPI and will give an error when trying to record something at 96000hz if the hardware is set to a different rate), but would like to test some of my older files in case I didn't record them properly back then.

I know that one can just run a .wav file through eac3to to see if it has padded zeroes, but haven't been able to find any info on checking files for resampling or bit-depth conversion.
