So I've recently ramped up collecting blu-ray remasters of old action flicks I enjoy - films like Stone Cold or Navy Seals (the Vinegar Syndrome remaster is quite good) - and that got me perusing for extended cuts that I've never seen. After watching the excellent Unrated Cut of Hard Target from Kino Lorber, I started digging and realized that so many of these cuts have never made it past their DVD phase.

Long story short, that digging led me to this nifty niche forum. I admire those of you putting in the work to bring some of these movies into the HD era, and I hope we can have some convos and maybe you'll share some of your work with me. I also hope to learn something about remastering/restoring myself, so that one day, perhaps, I can contribute more than just words to this repository of cinema.

That's all. This is me saying howdy, and I can't wait to get pedantic about movies with y'all soon.

Passionnément (2000) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119866/) is an obscure French movie with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Bruno Nuytten (one of the most successful French cinematographers) as a director and writer. This is one of three films directed by him and one of which is Camille Claudel (1998) - well received and a great watch

There seems to be one way to view the movie and it's to buy the DVD from French amazon, which I purchased. It looks to be produced and distributed by Studio Canal with DVD being released in oct 2009 (I think). Googling quickly just now, there is a pirate rip uploaded to a Russian website which looks identical to my version.

I'm interested in producing French and English subtitles, as I'm not French-speaking. DVD offers only French dubbing and no subtitles.

Vanan services gave me a quote of 1020USD (discount from 1176USD just cus they're cool ) for production of French and English captioning. Pricing is reasonable for professional captioning and matches other providers of this service, but is not really reasonable for my personal viewing.

Trying out an AI captioning service produce low quality subtitles at a fraction of the price. A French random discord user reviewed them and said some lines are nonsense.

I'm hoping there is interest in this film and some of you can guide me on how to accomplish producing the subtitles and sharing them. Again, apologies if I'm posting this in a wrong forum section.

What is this?
Between 2005 and 2008, television studio Nickelodeon aired the very popular cartoon show Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, while pitching the show to Nickelodeon back in 2004, the creators of the show produced an eleven-minute pilot episode, the plot of which was not to be part of the overall series, but just a generic adventure for the main characters of the show, and to show the elements of bending and establish the world. This pilot was received positively by test audiences and the show was green-lit.

The pilot episode was never aired on television, but was included as a bonus feature on the DVD release of Book 1: Water, and in 2018 it was also included as a bonus feature on the show's Blu-Ray release. On DVD and Blu-Ray, however, the only available audio track was a commentary track by show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. In 2010, the pilot episode was also released on iTunes, this time in lower picture quality, but with the original audio track.

What did I do to it?
The pilot episode was originally animated at 24 frames per second. However, on both the DVD and the Blu-Ray releases, the episode is shown in 30fps, with interlaced frames resulting from a 3:2 pulldown process. Depending on the video player and settings used, this would result in a blurry image, a stuttering image or strange artifacts in the video.

Video
I wanted to present this episode in the highest quality I could given the available sources. I manually went through the episode, shot by shot, and reversed the telecine process, producing a crisp, correct image at 24 frames per second. I then upscaled that image to 1080p.
Apart from this video track, the original video track from the Blu-Ray is also included.

Audio
Both the original audio track (from the iTunes version) and the commentary track (from the Blu-Ray) are included.

Subtitles
I added both English and Dutch optional subtitles to the episode.

Bonus
I included a ten-page document in PDF-format explaining the technical process of making this in more detail.
I also included all programs and scripts used to make this, so that in future others might improve upon my work.

Like many others I'm sure, I found this forum after being extremely dissatisfied with the state of the commercial releases of some of my favourite films. While not a full on industry "pro" (except live sports production and live TV encoding for cable distribution), I have tangentially touched parts of the film production and post-production world, and have always been quite passionate about a/v presentation, and also about preserving the experiences I've held so dearly.

Watching 4k77 with my kids yesterday, and finding this forum among others has given me hope that all of those experiences that I thought lost to the capitalist/corporate machine forever, are in fact still out there. This is all thanks to such a passionate community of like-minded individuals that are putting in a lot of work for the good of the community. I love it already!

I'm not yet sure when or how I can contribute to the community, but hopefully I can figure out a way. Thanks everyone!
