  optimizing my LaserDisc Captures using AviSynth
Posted by: FilmRestoration2015 - 2025-10-02, 11:44 PM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (1)

I have a LaserDisc collection of about 75 titles and have been capturing a number of them in OBS Studio via the Hauppauge 610 Video Capture Device connected to my Pioneer CLD-V2800 player and ASUS ProArt P16 laptop. It took me a year of experimenting with various settings in OBS after recording lots of discs, but I finally settled on a group of core settings that yield me a completed capture I am pleased with. All my discs are NTSC and live action, although I plan to add several animated and anime titles as well. I’ve been capturing them at a resolution of 640x480 and with a color space of Rec. 601 (limited range of colors). While the preset fps in my Hauppauge settings is 29.97, I set the Common FPS Values for the output in OBS’ settings to 59.94 fps after reading posts that frames actually get dropped or deleted if captured at lower frame rates. I would rather continue capturing at 59.94 or 60 for the output because I don’t want to lose any frames. OBS automatically converts all interlaced content to progressive. I’ve been recording both the analog and stereo mixes in PCM. The majority of them sound excellent.

Throughout the second half of this year, I’ve been researching and learning about many filters and scripts in AviSynth, which I want to use for much of my post-processing work. I have StaxRip (version 2.50.2-x64) and many plugins/filters from the archived package, which also include those for VapourSynth that I downloaded from GitHub. I’ve been assembling a tentative plan for my workflow and would especially welcome your suggestions to tweak or perhaps add different filters. Feedback on parameters and preset values is also much appreciated.

I have watched at least 60 of my LDs and want the filters to take care of the most common global issues associated with this analog format: chroma noise, jagged edges/shimmering, dot crawl, rainbow patterns, and random video artifacts that pop up. (I may engage in more extensive frame-by-frame restorations for certain titles.) While I would like to clean up those anomalies to a considerable degree, I want to preserve the original texture and detail of the image as much as possible. I have envisioned my restoration project in three parts:

(1) Since nearly every one of my titles was originally shot on film before transfer to LD, I will perform an inverse telecine for each. Since there may have been duplicate frames created during capture, I will make sure TDecimate is part of my script. All of this goes towards converting 59.94 to 23.976.

(2) Anti-aliasing, very moderate noise reduction, and restoration cleanup.

(3) I will be eventually transferring the finished file to a BD-R (720p), which I’ll watch on my QLED TV. I have a region-free Sony Blu-ray player that has an option to output precisely at 720p. At this stage, I will want to convert YUV to RGB and Rec. 601 to Rec. 709. I will be upscaling/resizing the captured SD files to 960x720.

Here are my scripts and projected order for each job’s workflow:

Part 1

Field:
TIVTC
TFM().TDecimate()
cthresh=255

Frame Rate:
ChangeFPS(24000, 1001)

Part 2

Line:
DAA
daa3mod()

Noise:
mClean(thSAD=400, chroma=true, sharp=10, rn=14, deband=4, depth=0, strength=20)

Restoration:
ChubbyRain2(th=10, radius=10, sft=10) # progressive sources only
DOTKILLS(ITERATIONS=1)

Note: I also will probably use DeScratch to minimize and/or remove scratches/tramlines from B&W movies and older films shot in color.

Part 3

Color: YUV / RGB
YUV to RGB
Dither_convert_yuv_to_rgb()
ColorMatriSickmode="rec.601->rec.709")

I will be using ffmpeg - ProRes as my encoder.
Encoder command line:
Custom: --colorprim bt709 --transfer bt709 --colormatrix bt709

MOV is my container.

  Lethal Weapon (1987) in Scope 2.35:1
Posted by: Plissken1138 - 2025-10-02, 01:29 AM - Forum: In progress - Replies (23)

This is something along the lines of Stamper's reframing of The Dead Pool few years back. Who knows, I maybe conjure LW5 along the way Tongue
I recently rewatched LW with fixed 2.35 cropping to see how it moves and a lot of it fits nicely in Scope but a lot is pretty tight and needs a bit of massaging, being this wasn't initially framed for Scope, like a lot of WB titles from mid to late 80's.

  Dune (1984) - 70mm Mix ['98 Universal DVD 5.1] synced to Koch 4K Master
Posted by: izzybell - 2025-09-26, 05:36 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

Dune was released in 70mm during it's original theatrical release with a 6-Track Dolby Stereo Mix

"The 70mm prints of “Dune” featured magnetic Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded Baby Boom format [Dolby processor setting “42”]) and 2.20:1 imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm and provided a superior projection and sound experience in comparison to the film’s 35mm prints."

Source: https://www.in70mm.com/presents/1963_blo.../index.htm

In my research, I found evidence that the 5.1 track on 1998 Universal DVD had duped mono surrounds as well as matrixing in the spectrogram. Referencing with other 70mm mixes from around the same time seems to make a strong case for this being the 70mm 6-Track mix. This mix noticeably has less distortion in the surround channels and slightly cleaner dialogue than the modern 5.1 mix.

This track is available in FLAC 5.1, it syncs to the Koch 4K master (Arrow US/GBR BD, Koch DEBD/4K). If you need the audio in any other format feel free to state in the PM. Freely available to any account new and old.

  The Terminator (1984) German 35mm DVD Colors (1.1 released!)
Posted by: sanjuro_61 - 2025-09-23, 02:28 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (1)

Hey guys.

Well, yet another regrade arises. There have been a handful of people that have done a regrade before me, but as far as I know, no one used that legendary 35mm print sourced german DVD as reference before. I did. I found a divx in my old friend called emule Smile

People that have seen this theatrically have reported it looked pretty close to the remastered bluray. Even more teal in some places, less so in others. That Ger DVD does look very much like the bluray. Some shots look more teal, others less so. Sometimes it tends to look a bit too much green, so having a certain tolerance when tweaking the colors is common sense.
The upscaled 4K version is also available, naturalised: I did some processing (dynamic dehaloing, some lens blur, regraining...) to make it look less artificial, and more filmic. It's still far from ideal, though (IMO, the 1080p is the way to go).
The two mono mixes (original and MGM) are included here. To whoever shared the laserdisc lossless audio, thank you!
I fixed the sync problems, tape dropouts, and added a bit of eq to the original one.

So:
- 1080p (34.4 GB) and  upscaled 4K (41.2 GB) regraded using the 35mm print sourced german DVD as reference.
- Naturalised 4K.
- MGM mono mix, and original mono mix synchronized and fixed included.
- Harlan Ellison works not aknowledged.

Mutisubs included (same ones as the original discs).

  Star Wars - The Phantom Menace (1999) - 1080p - Reconstructed TC
Posted by: sanjuro_61 - 2025-09-23, 02:25 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (7)

Hey guys.

I've had this project in the vault for some time.
This is a reconstruction of the theatrical cut of The Phantom Menace, using the Bluray as source. The missing/digitally altered/puppet yoda shots have been replaced with either the 35mm print that has been floating around for a while, or in some cases, the HDTV version (sometimes the HDTV is just better, and it doesn't have any missing frames!). All of them cleaned and graded to match the colors of the BD. The shot of mace Windu and Yoda in Qi Gong's funeral was a real pain in the ass to process (that flickering light... omg).
And, yes, I tweaked the colors of the film, mostly to tame the magenta push. A few scenes required more work to match the 35mm. Overall, the 35mm is not all that different from the bluray colors.
There is some additional processing to make it look more filmic: dehaloing, playing with soften and sharpen, adding a fine layer of grain...

It's been a while, since I did this one, but the audio track does include those "Vote now!" lines, buried in the mix in home versions.

  Fantasia (1940) 1080p - Reconstructed 1946 Cut (uncensored)
Posted by: sanjuro_61 - 2025-09-23, 02:24 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (6)

Hey guys.
Bringing you more stuff.

This is a reconstruction of the 1946 cut of Fantasia. Or perhaps I should say the home video cut, as I used the DVD as reference (title card at the beginning, and end credits).
I used the bluray as source, and the 35mm scan floating around for the uncensored shots (cleaned, enhanced, regraded and regrained). For the interludes, I used the DVD, upscaled, and enhanced the missing scenes, color correcting them to match the bluray interludes grading. Obviously, they're not gonna look as good as a native HD, but I'm happy with the results. I did not regrade the film, except for the said censored shots and the interludes.

I had a bad surprise regarding the audio, though. There is a another restoration floating around that used the laserdisc audio (there seems to be a LD rip and two versions using the DVD as video source). I thought that audio would be in sync with the home video cut... but I was wrong. The guy who did the restoration edited the video, cutting(?) and duplicating frames to syncronize it to the audio. I looked for an alternative audio source, and we were lucky: the spanish dub included in the DVD is the closest (pretty much iddentical, except for the slightly reduced dynamics) to the laserdisc audio. I just needed to add the english interludes narration (no big deal).
But there's more! If you open the LD audio with an editor you'll see it's capped at around 8000Hz, that's why it sound so muffled. I did some work on it, applying several filters to extrapolate the high frequencies (quite an interesting time I had doing this...). The end result is very good. Not going to sound as good as a modern recording (Kostal version, or any other), but it sounds like a huge blanket has been removed from the speakers.
