Sometimes, there are 1.78:1 or 1.33:1 versions of 2.35:1 anamorphic movies that seem only cropped, but if you compare better, you can discover very few lines of image more - even on unexpected titles... like

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace - top HDTV, bottom DVB

You can see the feet of the droid on the right. Now, there is a very small "slice" more of image, only on bottom (maybe on top, or both, on other shots), and, even adding it, will lead to a problem with the Disney gigantic logo. And, maybe BD has a bit more. And, surely, a 35mm scan should have this. But I wanted to post it anyway! Big Grin

Weren't Star Wars Episodes II and III shot in 16:9 HDCAM (which is Super-35 like and has a native ratio of about 1.78:1) and finished digitally? I remember seeing II on TNT a few years ago and looked like a mix of slightly opened up shots and completely zoomed in ones.

AFAIK yes!

Yup, similar to what I saw on TNT but zoomed in a bit more. I don't remember if the extended scenes on the BD were in HD or pulled from SD elements used for the DVD, but now it's getting interesting!

Now with the HDTV airings, if one has capped them before 2012 or thereabouts then would the TCF/Lucasfilm be opened up or probably cropped if they were finished hard masked to 2.35 like the CG FX shots?

Someone that watched the broadcasting remembers a mix of open matte and cropped shots, so probably the cropped ones were with SFX.

I think I saw Episode II a few months ago on TV here and it was full 16:9, but SFX scenes were cropped indeed.

Really? Great! Do you remember the channel? Try to record it next time, along with EPIII! Ok

Might've been a longer time than that, I can't find any info on it or when it would be shown next. I found some clips from different channel (TV spots), but I think they're just cropped.
