[Archived] Escape from New York [Evit/PAVIS]: US & Italian theatrical [ARCHIVED]
Sorry to hear seamless branching isn't working Evit. I've been trying to get it working too with not much success. I think without a copy of scenist its very difficult.

I am trying to figure out bdedit. From what I read you might be able to modify a seamless branching bd into something you can use. Like maybe the Pixar movies which have seamless branching titles. Just a thought

Premiere doesn't support subs (haven't checked 16 which came out a few months ago) but only close caption. Encore support text and image subs but is very buggy with image subs and clearly they aren't going to fix it. You will have to create or mod the subs somewhere else and bring them into Encore

I would honestly like to look into learning Scenarist (I downloaded a pirate copy, I don't even know if it works) but I really don't have time to dedicate to new software.

For where the cut is, the transition doesn't even need to be THAT seamless but alas, seamless or not seamless, I have no idea how to do it so unless the guy shows up again (sometimes he does disappear for work, he says) I'll have to consider two separate discs.

I had the feeling that Encore could do it (potentially) but from what you say I better use something else. In this case I'll do a quick low-res encode to use in another program for subtitles. Luckly it's not a very "talky" film. Suggestions on the software to use?
I have subtitles that I ripped from the Italian Blu Ray but they won't match, I don't know if it's easier to change the timing or to make them from scratch.

Meanwhile I had a look at a pirate copy of the 35mm, it looks like the horizontal blue line in the restaurant is indeed a lens flare because it was always there. Shout's BR has a weird blocky effect inside the flare that initially made me think it was just another of those fake blu lines from the scan. I'm double checking every fix I applied before I move to the last phase

Good, told you these artefacts may come from the lens they used. The DP was pretty clear about it and said those were picked on purpose.

Only that one really. The vertical line at Hauk's arrival is still a reel damage or some transfer issue as it stays for the whole length of the scene.
To be honest, that lens flare in the restaurant could actually be fixed to some extent (by filling in some parts). It contains a weird effect that I think comes from some digital process (which is what lead me to believe it was an artefact at first). But it's only 3 frames, in case I'm wrong again I'll just leave it the way it is. It looked more natural on other releases though

At this point I'm not sure what damage Studio Canal as done to the film. I remember when they got they grubby hands on it, they went nuts trying to correct stuff which was in the negative from the get go and should stay there. But there's been so many DVDs and Blus, I can't tell anymore what's right or wrong. Just that the film had some lenses artefacts on purpose.

So far I've seen
- Older MGM scan from negative, that has been used since the first DVD.
- 2015 Shout Factory 4k scan from interpositive
- 2016 German BR release (same as Shout Factory but DNR and additional fixes)
(+2013 Italian BR which seems to have the same blu line as the Shout but way lower quality)

So looking forward to the finished product, Evit, thank you so much for all your hard work in trying to create the best version available, can't wait.

Thanks a lot for your support. I'll probably encode the US version first since I still need to do some tweaks to the Italian version. Probably it will see the light in early January as I'll be away from home in this week.

For those who are waiting on this, I'm waiting on boxing day discounts to buy an additional hard disk because I don't even have space enough to open Premiere at the moment. Sorry for the delay

Little update, I got a new hard disk and I'm about to do a first low quality export so I can use this file to work on subtitles on a separate program. I'll be doing English and Italian subtitles for the moment. Mr Brown, would you like me to add also German subtitles? In that case I would need a hand with those Tongue . Also, in Italy DVD/BR subtitles are direct translations of the English subtitles, which often differ from the lines from the actual dubbing, is it the same situation in Germany? If subtitling is easy enough I'm planning two types of Italian subtitles, one that is a direct transcript of Italian dub and another that is a translation of the English track.

After the subtitling is done I should move onto releasing the Blu-Ray of the US version which will include English, Italian and German audio tracks, all three in PCM. I calculated that they should all fit in a 25GB disc without compromisng video quality too much. Thanks for your patience. Big Grin
