Fair enough.  @zoidberg I don't necessarily think the LFE has been tampered a lot either. I'd say it's on par with the DTS DVD. Though ... judging LFE on headphones is borderline ridiculous lol.

It is doable to have a surround system running low and properly calibrated and not piss off one's neighbors.
If you have a good pair of monitor headphones then most films play just fine but you'll never be able to get the full spatial characteristics of a multichannel mix that way. I have to use my Sennheiser monitors at night hooked into my receiver but I am usually watching non discrete materials then. I'm quite interested in this topic though as I've long suspected mixes as being tampered with in ways such as this.

I stick to the rule of no loud noises after 10pm and I've never had any complaints. After that time it's headphones for me.
Unfortunately it's pure science that louder sounds better (provided the amplification is of high quality). Sometimes a fraction of a dB makes all the difference.

Little update. My little project here is almost done and ready for upload in principle.
Though, there was this mention of a PCM track. I understood it was from a laserdisc. Does anyone have this or about to acquire anytime soon? Might be a nice addition. Also, @
