@bronan, I'd like to give an update on the issue I first reported in post #113.
Apparently it was a combination of some lines being too big in length and duration with no gap inbetween them. It was messing up the whole sub somehow, but giving them some room to breathe was enough to fix it. So the problem was with the .ass file, as you suspected. Thanks once again for the tool and the assistance. Thanks given by: bronan

Great! I've been thinking about that no gap problem as it struck me on the Super Mario Bros animated movie we've been messing with. I think it should be possible to add an option to sub2bd to pre-process the ASS to detect that and add appropriate gaps. Did you find what gap length worked well? I can make that adjustable of course.

I can make that adjustable of course. The gaps I used vary from as little as 150ms to as much as 3s. I think is just a matter of separating lines that are too long, by any length. For what its worth, SubtitleEdit has a "fix common errors" function to manage gaps, but it seemed to only improve existing gaps rather than adding new ones. It does warn to shorten long lines, which I ignored because I was captioning long on-screen texts (a star wars crawl, to be specific), and considered solely that it wouldn't affect the viewing experience. So few people should run into this. Its actually better practice to skip a few frames between lines, so that's a mistake I wont repeat in the future. |
