I'm downloading this now, I'll update when I have it. Anyone else already checked it out?
I think it would be cool to have the LD audio to add to this. I sent the LD with the digital track to BusterD to rip a while back, if anyone has time to sync it I could get you the files. I'd do it but I've barely any free time with an 11 week old baby girl in the house.

Cool stuff, how did you stumble over it?
The quality is sadly not very good, for which I blame the bad compression. I doubt they even used x264. Add the low bitrate and the result is less than meh.
Replacing the audio certainly isn't a bad idea, it also sounds pretty bad to my ears. Unless I've had some weird setting on in my audio settings, which I admit is possible, been experimenting a bit.
Edit: Tbh I question the authenticity a little. The image is, aside from the bad compression, pretty clear, no jumping image, no film damage, nothing. How would you put that much effort into a restauration and then only publish it hidden as a link on some site nobody ever heard of?
Edit 2: The image looks pretty close color-wise to the Blu Ray according to one screen I compared. Overall I'd wager it's just a quick h264 encode of the VC-1 Blu Ray.

Yeah, compression is definitely an issue. I noticed it straight away. The audio's VBR!

I saw mention of it on the fortressofsolitude forum, apparently there was a trailer up on capedwonder but it looks to be gone now.

Shame the quality is lacking. I still don't have it all down, the speed through my VPN to the file isn't great, but I've got my expectations lowered now.

Just had a look and it's definitely not 35mm. It's not just a staright recolour of one bluray either though. The shot of Superman lifting the rocket, you can see him in the exhaust like the theatrical version bluray, its blown out in the 2001 cut. The Brando shot in the clouds is the original, which isn't present on any of the blurays. Must be from his 16mm print of the TV cut.

I had to play with settings for a while to get the file to download at a reasonable speed. Try switching to another country. The file came down in two hours after I did that, which isn't too bad.

It finished yesterday after a few hours. The VPN I could only get to connect via one IP as it's been acting up, so I was stuck with that speed, damn China.

LOL, well Superman was shot on 35mm so it is 35mm. But it's not from a print, I guarantee that. It looks someone got a hold of the same transfer used on the bluray but without the grain management, and based this version on that. It could have been a HDTV broadcast or something. Where is the Brando shot you speak of?

Thanks for posting the article.
As for 35mm, you know I was refering to the direct source for this release, and not the means by which the movie was originally filmed.
The Brando shot it the one where Superman is hearing the voices of his fathers in the clouds at the end before he turns back time. In the theatrical print, which is how it looked on every release pre DVD, is more of a normal cut out of Brando faded into the clouds. The DVD's onward (other than the TV cut blu ray), Michael Thau had them re-do the effect and he looks more part of the clouds.
