4K UHD - Alternative audio thread
#31
Yes, the 4K has DTS-X, the Blu-ray had a DTS-HD MA, whereas the original DVDs had DD 5.1, and the french 3 disc edition has special DTS tracks that were adjusted for maximum impact.

The mix is supposed to be loud, compressed and in your face, not confortable and clear. On the 4K, the off screen voices commenting the action are completely clean and clear, whereas on the DVDs, they are drowned by the surrounding music and noises.

Interesting, I remember reading on OT that the LD DTS mix was superior to the Blu-ray so presumably the French DVD is the same mix. Would be very interested to hear it if you get round to it.

I would need to convert back to 23.976 though, as it is Pal shifted + need to make sure the pitch is correct.

I don't even have a surround set up to be able to judge these things. I'm just helping people sync the tracks if they want to so that they can make their own comparisons and their own choice. Feedback as to which BD tracks are actually better/worse would be very much appreciated.

Yes, the main point here is to get as many alternative audio tracks (preferably the original tracks) synced to the UHD. Of course, where there's a clear indication of superiority to any of the tracks, I'll leave it in the comments.

Using BD info, I'm able to pinpoint the delay in all the 007 films in UHD from iTunes in contrast to the Blu-ray discs.

I will post the info for each of them so that people can remux all the subs or dubs they want.

Love this thread BDgeek! I'm muxing the 4K Avengers with the Blu-ray 7.1 track right now.

Please share any other data you've figured out in terms of audio comparisons/delays.

I actually need to make some corrections. I recently discovered that the method I was using to compare video tracks could be off by a frame. I'm now using a better method and the correct delays are as follows:

Iron Man (2008)
BD DTS-HD MA 7.1 to UHD-BD -2002ms.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)
2D BD DTS-HD MA 7.1 to UHD-BD +41ms.

Where a movie has been given an object-based remix I always like to keep a channel-based mix as an option. Whether these are any closer to the original theatrical mix or not, who knows?

Would be nice if you could also post your findings on the Blu-rays / LD Mono (if available) to the 4k AMZN AJP69 Webrips for Goldfinger, YOLT and OHMSS as well if you have them as using the frame difference method, they still seem slightly off to me.

I could do this for a lot of the DEFLATE 4K WEB releases of the 007 movies. Are the AJP69 releases higher quality?

Thanks a lot alinskey!

I'm sorry I left it drifting for a great while, but I intened to put it back on track. And I have plenty of information to add/share.

I'll be away from home for the next two to three weeks. but it will be one of my missions for this coming year.

Thanks again Turisu and everybody else for sharing information!

The preservation of original audio tracks and the search for better sounding releases gains more and more relevance over time as each coming format and/or new release on home video release tends to leave them behind.
