Jurassic Park - Mixes & Myths
#21
As this is a good spot to discuss the variations and pros and cons of each JURASSIC PARK track, a while back someone over as AVS had done dynamic range readings of the various mixes, posted a number of graphs, and found the 7.1 3-D bluray mix to have the widest dynamic range. Wish I could find the post but so far no luck.

There of course are a number of ways to judge a mix. Is it the original mix, how low and high does it go compared to the others mixes? Likewise for any noise reduction. Dynamic range, EQ, mixing practices also play a factor. All make for a fascinating discussion.

Does anyone happen to have the cinema DTS track of The Lost World JP or the LD AC-3 of the first JP?

Thanks to a kind member here I've been able to take a look at the theatrical DTS from The Lost World.

It seems that the DTS LD has the theatrical mix but with the surrounds unattenuated by the required -3dB. The LFE isn't boosted as it is on the JP DTS LD probably because the TLW had a much louder LFE channel originally. This may go some way to explaining why the LFE on the JP DTS LD was so overcooked. Since the JP DTS LD was released after the TLW DTS LD it's possible they just wanted it to sound the same as the sequel.

The only home video mix of TLW I don't have is the DTS DVD. If this shares characteristics with the 2nd JP DTS DVD then it should be the theatrical mix with correctly attenuated surrounds. If anyone can share the audio track from this DVD then I'd be happy to confirm this.

So if it's the only problem, let's reduce it by 3dB and presto! We have the theatrical track! Big Grin

Yes, exactly. In fact it may even be an improvement over the cinema DTS as the LD DTS has a fully discrete LFE channel. As the theatrical DTS audio needs to have the LFE channel de-matrixed from the surrounds it results in it being overly active with audio present where it should be silent. I don't know if this is how the channel would have been theatrically or if this is just a side-effect of the software decoding method.

Well, if we would like to get a track as closer to the theatrical experience as possible, if there were a DTS track and it's available, I'd use the Cinema DTS - eventually adjusting the surround and/or LFE level (talking in general about this).
The LD is the second best choice, if the Cinema DTS track is not available.

Though it has been argued that listening to a cinema track in a home theatre environment won't be anything like the theatrical experience as the audio is mixed for a much larger space. A good home mix will have subtle adjustments to get the same experience in a smaller space.

I'm not so much trying to find the 'best' track as this is going to be very subjective. But I am very interested in how home mixes compare to their theatrical counterparts. Nolan's Batman trilogy has basically had the original cinema DTS tracks put straight on to the UHDs. The 5.1 track on Raimi's Spider-Man UHD is essentially the same whereas no home mix of The Matrix is anything like the cinema DTS (BD TrueHD 5.1 is probably closest).

I could start a thread with more comparisons if anyone is interested. I just wish I had more cinema DTS tracks to work with... Smile

Agree. I change my statement to "if we would like to get a track as closer to the theatrical one as possible" then!
