[In progress] TERMINATOR 2 Blu-ray regrade to 35mm
#1
Hey, guys.

Thanks to whomever released a grindhouse 35mm UHD scan of Terminator 2 recently, I have started to regrade the 2015 US Blu-ray master to look like it with all its original cyan, purple and yellow glory. Hopefully my process will work on the whole film. Here's where I am at for now, about 10 minutes in. While at it, I fix the thin black edges to fill the entire width, some shots more than others, so that it remains the same all the way. It's all temporary of course. I'll have to revisit the contrast among other things:

Awesome.

You certainly have a good eye for colour grades, I'm glad you're giving this one a shot.
Best of luck with this Smile

Looking at the screens, it looks like a push to magenta. You can see this in the POV of the terminator and the fire of the opening credits. Also look at John's face. The color looks greenish.

Might be just me, but it doesn't look right.

No, it's a shot by shot colormatching process using Dr. Dre's tool. John's face looks too green, that's right, but it's under a flashing light at that moment, plus I already revisited this shot. The thing is it's linked to the opening credits without a clear cut, so I had to find a middle ground with the flaming opening credits. But I found out that I could make a cut when the title card closes abruptly to apply a separate LUT. Like I said, what you see here is temporary, just to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Okay, it's relaunched. I'm using two 35mm scans as references this time, the one in "HDR" 2160p as it has cyan and purple cohabitating and more yellow fire, and another one in 1080p SDR for the rest. This is where it's at for now:

I'll have to revisit the opening credits as before the title screen, it's very orangy red and saturated, and after the title screen, it's more yellow as I wanted it to be, but it's also less saturated, so I'll have to see what compromise I can do on that matter.

I'm considering replacing the opening Carolco logo with the one from Cliffhanger as the one on T2 is quite zoomed in and morphs partially out of the frame. Also, Cliffhanger has the TriStar opening logo before Carolco as it used to be. What do you guys think? Shall I add it to open the video? If I do it, then the audio tracks will have to be modified to add the TriStar opening, and I'm not sure I can do it properly in multichannel on my own for the several tracks I plan to include in English and French.

If you're wanting to keep the audio in a bitstream format, you can just convert the audio on the logo to the same codec/bitrate and combine it with the rest.
