[Request] Ghost in the Shell Japanese/English Dub mix
#1
So I love 1995's Ghost in the Shell a lot. It's one of my favorite movies, and it speaks to me.

That being said, I've never been entirely satisfied with either the English or Japanese dubs of the film.

The English one has a generally good set of performances with one or two standouts such as the Puppet Master character voiced by Tom Wyner being a standout, but with the Mimi Woods as the Major being very... misdirected, let's say.

Meanwhile the the Japanese dub has very good performances, such as the Major and Bato, but Iemasa Kayumi's Puppet Master in my opinion very inferior to Tom Wyner's version of the character.

So here's my request:

Using the DVD release of the film, could you put together an edit of the film that has Tom Wyner's performance of PM put into the Japanese dub?

You could probably do this with something like Audacity after ripping the tracks and converting them to wav. You'd just need to copy/paste sections of the audio, making sure the timecodes line up.
I think the JP track is 2.0 only though (unless you use the confusingly named GITS 2.0), so might be easier to downmix the EN track to 2.0 (or use a 2.0 version if available), otherwise you might need to use a software Dolby decoder to decode the JP 2.0 track to 5.1.

originally, yeah the JP audio was a 2.0 mix compared to EN's 5.1 mix. GiTS 2.0 offers 6.1 mixes for both JP and EN tracks, although ofc note that not only is GiTS 2.0 a slightly different cut, but the sound mix is quite different at times.

however, for the remastered 4K release of GiTS, that included remixed audio for both JP and EN; on the 4K disc both tracks are in 7.1+Atmos (ofc this kind of project would lose atmos), and on the standard disc both tracks are in 5.1 (TrueHD or DTS-HD MA depending on region). curiously, the credits music on the remixed JP track has been changed; iirc its been changed to the same music on the EN dub.

none of the releases i have include an EN 2.0 track so if the original mix is preferred, then down/upmixing will be needed; id recommend downmixing EN if the bulk of the audio will be from the JP track
