[Canceled] Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (IMAX Recreation)

Yeah, "easy" doesn't usually play into the equation. If it did, this community wouldn't exist because anybody could do this stuff (or the studios would do it right themselves - can you imagine that? LOL)

If I may make a suggestion though, don't discard that "alternate" take and, maybe, include it as an extra for your project (as this would also help with preservation aspect) where you include (for example) 10 seconds prior/post the "alternate" shot and those that want to see it (or incorporate it into the footage) can do so easily. NOT trying to tell you what to do or give you more work, just a suggestionWink

I am also wondering if you couldn't overlay the BD footage over the telemundo for that shot to make it look a little better, since it (telemundo) has such high compression and that would easily take care of the logo.

I'm definitely going to keep the alternative shot and line. Hope fully I can include that in some capacity

Honestly, that's just of those rare shots where the BD actually covered the same area the logo occupied. When I started out I used the FXX as the base for the IMAX and checked it against both the Telemundo and BD but quickly found out the BD was mostly useless in fixing the logo. So, to speed it up I only checked the BD on the very hard shots I couldn't fix.

That shot was an easy one to fix since the only movement was on the left side. All I had to do was fix the one frame and duplicate it for the whole shot. Since it worked and look good I never checked the BD till I posted those pics.

So I think I'm getting close.

One sequence I couldn't fix by patching so I blurred the logo out best I could. In quick motion you won't notice. I also have to sync the BD soundtrack.

I did find one odd thing. On the BD when Hunt is in the sandstorm chasing the villain he is hanging on the car on the right side

BD/IMAX

In the next shot Hunt pulls himself up on the car to avoid get crushed as the car runs against the wall. Funny thing is that in the BD the shot is reversed to the left side.

Then for the next shot but the BD and HDTV are on the same side again

So I flipped the shot to match the BD

Yeah i agree theatrical all the way. "No shit" is just better anyways Wink

I sure can't wait for HDR movies to get rid of banding.

I also (I think) was able to re-create the expanding frame from the Dubai climb. In theaters it started at 2.35 and expanded to the whole IMAX frame and I was able to do that here moving from 2.35 to 1.77.

That's cool man. I was actually wondering how you were going to handle that. Looking forward to seeing a sample of thisWink

Thanks, jerry. I'll build you out a full sample of the whole thing but in the meantime here is the sequence in question:

Astectically I would prefer a slower expand but near as I can figure by comparing them to the BD, these are the frames that would of expanded in the theater

I had no idea they did it that way with some movies, always thought it was how we normally see the 2 aspect ratio. Pretty cool though, and you did a great job with that PDB.

Of course I've only seen one aspect changing movie in Imax, that would be the Dark Knight. Best damn movie experience I've ever had. Plus it was free tickets, and the day before it was released. Wink

Thanks Doombot.

I think MIGP is the only film to do that. Normally, it just switches between 2.35 and IMAX just like Dark Knight (or the other Nolan films and STID) but for the climb it opens open vertically into the IMAX frame. I read all about it online from the editor's blog and the HDTV seems to back that up. I decided to open up into the 1.77 frame to give this the approximately same feel.

In other news, jedeitor was nice enough to look at the logo from the frames I couldn't fix (since they were cut out of the Telemundo broadcast) and did a wonderful job removing it. Far better then what I had accomplished. I should of asked him to do the whole thing instead of patching it with another HDTV broadcast Wink

So big thanks to jedeitor!

Yeah, his skills are rather impressive. I like the way it opens up in this scene and you did a good job replicating this, albeit I think that it happens a little fast. Close enough though and is a unique thing that I'm glad you are preserving.
