I realized after posting earlier that you also had the PCM track for the 98 LD, so you can do both versions with minimal edits (if any) to the 93 or 98 LD tracks.

My vote is for the true IC (i.e. 93 LD) since it has never seen a HD release (or even a DVD release for that matter).

Why exactly would you need to edit the '93 PCM?  Obviously, there are the differences between the Italian cut and the others, but are there also many missing/additional frames?  I know that the Mondo and the first MGM BD differ greatly in terms of which frames they have and am curious to see how the former compares with '93 LD.

The Leone films are very peculiar in terms of frame-count.  There are usually a few missing/additional frames here and there when comparing two different releases, but the Leone films differ markedly.  When you scrub through the Mondo and the first MGM BD, they often change shots at the same point, but the frames within shots are out of sync.  In other words, when the two are are in sync, the shot-changes occur at different points, so they appear to be out of sync when scrubbing through the video.  It's bizarre.

Well my 93 PCM is a raw capture. By that I mean it still has the MGM home video music, the trailer's sountrack, the silence of the side turnover and dead air where I swapped the LDs and at the end when the movie was finished. So at a bare minimum it has to be cut down and synced to the HD.

Otherwise what you point about the frame count is true. Shot changing at different points happens a lot. I compared the 4K, Mondo, 93 DVD and 98 LD and all have different frames here in there. You would think the 4K is the most complete but running against the 93 there are still difference and some in the favor of the 93. For example, in the 4K and Mondo, when Tuco is trying to hang Blondie, you see a shot of the cannon firing, a close-up of a wall and then the room collapsing. In the 93, it goes directly from the cannon to the collapse but the shot of the cannon last longer. You can see more smoke coming out.

When I cut the 4K down to the 93 I started off by trying to match and cut every frame perfectly. I quickly realized that was stupid and I should only cut out the shots that are missing from the 93. To remove one or two frames here and there defeats the purpose. All as long the sound is in sync.

I don't want to diminish the extended cut. I still think it great to watch with the extra footage but I want the option to not watch it too.

I agree. I think 93 is the way to go and then 98 later. Thanks again for the 98 track, BTW. Didn't think I'd have a use for it but now its going to be very important to this project.

Also I noticed that the optical titles in the Mondo are inconsistent. Basically when it says Good, Bad and Ugly. For example, It will show Blondie riding on his horse in one shot and the next cut which is still from the same shot has different color timing. I assume its because of a different print being used or because of generational printing. So I'm going to try to color the inserts to better match the original shot.

Also I was greatly unsatisfied with the 4K inserts in the the torture scene, so I used shots from the old Extended Edition BD. The old EE had enough leeway to grade and match the Mondo, much, much closer. So its looks like I'm going to use the EE for a few shots here and there and only use the 4K if it re-grade works. Unless Chew finds a better source.

I can't express how crappy the 4K is.

Well if I know one thing I'm bad at estimates but the video for the 93 should be done this weekend. Figure a few days for syncing the audio and general cleanup. Do a video check and send it out to anyone willing to check. So maybe week and a half.

Slightly OT: Does there exist proper English subtitles for the Italian Cut (translated from the Italian dialogue)?

The US/IC 35MM prints also have this inconsistency.

That's a very good question. It would be great to have English subtitles that are a literal translation of the Italian script. To the best of my knowledge, they don't exist. We should seriously consider having someone fluent in both languages tackle this.

Oh, I see.  You just meant the standard editing that one always has to do with LD captures.   Thanks for clarifying!
