AOMedia AV1
I'll gather some interesting info found around the web about AOMedia Video 1 a.k.a. AV1 here, in no particular order; feel free to add more!
FILM GRAIN SYNTHESIS
This is very interesting for fan preservation purposes; tested personally, it works quite well - it's like to overlay a grain plate, but with grain synthesis it should not be encoded, hence you can expect similar quality for grainy sources but obtained at lower bitrates.
A post on reddit about grain synthesis:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AV1/comments/n4si96/
I strongly encourage you to take a look at the following paper - at least at the comparison images; you can see how similar the synthesized grain pattern is to the original grain!

DEMO
MPEG-DASH Adaptive Streaming with AV1 by Mozilla and Bitmovin:
https://demo.bitmovin.com/public/firefox/av1/
Well, "Tears of steel" (2.40:1) at 1080@3mbps looks very good to me - it is 4mbps for a full frame 1080p video, hence 16mbps for 2160p; so a whole UHD movie could be fit on a BD-25 with enough space for lossless audio track(s)!

So when VVC and AV1 are not tuned for VMAF, the former is merely few percent points better than the latter - and still VVC does not use grain synthesis and is royalty burden.

I released two new themes, light and dark, with revised logo.
I made the new light theme as default.
If you don't like it, you can always revert to the classic theme - go to the User CP/Your Profile/Edit Options
Please report eventual bugs, thanks!

Ripping HD DVD Evo Files? |

Has anyone got any experience with ripping these?
I don't have a drive but a friend ripped the TC of Troy with AnyDVD and sent me the files. The rip process seemed to go well without any errors.
First thing I did is attempted to demux with TS Muxer. The later versions of TSMuxer gave an error about not being able to read all of the files and the only option I had was a SD file. I then tried one of the earlier versions and that gave me the option of a HD stream. I demuxed that, it gave me a VC1 file but all I got from it was garbled video.
I then tried Evodemux, that gave me a message about the file being encrypted and that it needed decrypting first:
Code: Opening file PEVOB_1.EVO

Done.
Evodemux still let me proceed but again garbled video.
I then tried a program called BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5. That has a key database (189 movies in total) and it lists Troy as an option. I had to make an ISO file from the digital files I have, mount that and then point BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5 to that drive. That then gave me the following error:
Code: Backup HD-DVD V1.00 (C# Port) Starting
Testing source
Found valid HD-DVD source.
Disc Hash: 3624DEC53823E6B934413339F4F0733067700C95
Look for this movie in my database
Could not find this movie in my database. Please update your key file.
The disc hash for Troy in the BackupHDDVDGUI_0.5 database is different, it's F1E5D1838BC981C160DBD54ABEE09F7D39513CB7. It looks like the DC and TC of Troy were released on HDDVD, so I'm thinking maybe they only decrypted the DC and the key was never cracked for the TC?
The other program I've read about people using is DVDFab, but that didn't recognise any of the files or the ISO.

New layout - BETA TEST! |

In few minutes I'm going to reorganize the forum layout - not a revolutionary change, and no forums/subforums will be deleted, only sorted in a different way.
The new layout is in beta test until the end of the year; if there will be enough positive response, I'll keep it - if not, I'll revert back to the old one.
Personally I think the new layout is cleaner, but it's up to you to decide that... so, vote vote VOTE!
