  DPLII Upmix to 5.1
Posted by: Doctor M - 2022-01-02, 09:24 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (3)

Back in 2010(?!) I started a thread on OTF about how to upmix stereo tracks to 5.1.  A lot of the stuff in it are now out of date and would probably take a lot of work and installing of old software just to pull off.

Does anyone have a more modern (and better quality) way of doing that now?  SurCode is the only thing I have found that may do the job and it is not cheap.

I've been contacted by someone who wanted me to listen to their upmix and give my opinion and I'm hoping to provide a better answer then: leave it stereo and let the AVR do the work.

Edit: Back when I wrote that guide, there were details of how DPL was mixed that made matrixing the channels easy.  It's largely gone from the internet.  The only thing I've found is this: https://dvedaa.github.io/posts/gsoc-2020/
And it's weird.  I'm not sure I trust the channel mapping for DPL2's surround channels.

That said, I'm working on a cunning plan to make this easy as heck for anyone needing to do this.

Edit 2: Going back to a 2010 version of Wikipedia's Dolby Pro Logic page yielded what I was looking for... and yeah that other page's DPL2 surrounds don't coincide.

Edit 3: Ah, heck. That's what I used originally for my matrces, but it was later changed to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit...g_matrices
then this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit...g_matrices
Then removed. My head hurts.

Alice in Wonderland (1951) Archive Collection LD Isolated M&E Track
Posted by: James76 - 2022-01-01, 07:32 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Hi,

I own both the 2004 Masterpiece Edition 2-disc DVD set and 2016 65th Anniversary BD+DVD combo pack of Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951). I was wondering if anyone has the 1995 Archive Collection LD of this movie so they can rip the isolated music-and-effects track from it in 2.0 mono LPCM and sync a version of it for each restored transfer so they can fit the transfers and I can mux the files to MKV rips of the movie from both the 2004 DVD and 2016 BD using MKVToolNix GUI. I would also like to know what the delays for both versions of the movie are.

Thanks!

  Hitchcock's: Rebecca 1940 Audiotrack DVD/Laserdisc
Posted by: freedomland - 2021-12-31, 11:08 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Hey,
I was just looking on Blah-ray audio blog because I wanted to look if there is anything about Rebecca 1940. Good that I looked into it and now I am a bit concerned which audiofile is suited best. He clearly suggests that "the old R2 Prism Leisure Corporation DVD" is suited best for watching
So my question is that if anybody could help me in finding this particular release? Or someone has even access to a Laserdisc release. I would like to sync it to the carlotta film release. That would be awesome.

  120V/60Hz to 220V/50Hz
Posted by: allldu - 2021-12-30, 08:58 PM - Forum: General technical discussions - Replies (9)

So guys, I have an opportunity to import a Shure HTS 3500 from the US. But the thing is it's a US machine, which works on 120V/60Hz power. So my question to you - what would be the easiest/cheapest way for me to adopt it to the European voltage (220V/50Hz)? 120V to 220V step up would be a no brainer, just use the power converter, but 60Hz to 50Hz makes it a little trickier (at least for me!). I did a bit of research online but somehow did not get a clear answer about what power converter I should be using fot this. I also read that some 60Hz machines play just fine on 50Hz and I should not bother at all. Maybe this is the case with this one too? My limited technical knowledge prevents me from making any kind of (un)educated guess! Big Grin Any advise is really appreciated!

Shadowlands (1993) - print sourced transfer
Posted by: NeonBible - 2021-12-30, 08:30 PM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (8)

Caught this on TV today, and noticed the transfer was taken from a print. Specks, scratches and cigarette burns, as well as that typical look and colour.

I wondered if the Blu-ray is like that and after looking up caps it is not!

Here are some comparisons (BD caps are first):

Its available on BBC iPlayer to stream. Unfortunately they only offer 720p (in 2021 going on 2022 lol), 50fps and has a logo (but thankfully sits in the black border).

The Ghost And The Darkness 1996 - Aspect Ratio?
Posted by: alleycat - 2021-12-30, 12:49 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (41)

Anyone know what is the story with the aspect ratio on this? Theatrically it was 2:39:1 according to imdb, but on every home video release it has been either 2:10:1 or 2:09:1. I don't really get why they would change the aspect ratio like that?

As a test here is a frame from the blu ray which is actually 2:11:1:

And here is the same frame resized to 2:39:1:
