  TERMINATOR 2 Blu-ray regrade to 35mm
Posted by: Beber - 2021-09-12, 01:58 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (6)

Hey, guys.

Thanks to whomever released a grindhouse 35mm UHD scan of Terminator 2 recently, I have started to regrade the 2015 US Blu-ray master to look like it with all its original cyan, purple and yellow glory. Hopefully my process will work on the whole film. Here's where I am at for now, about 10 minutes in. While at it, I fix the thin black edges to fill the entire width, some shots more than others, so that it remains the same all the way. It's all temporary of course. I'll have to revisit the contrast among other things:

Who here can do bit-perfect LD audio capture?
Posted by: TServo2049 - 2021-09-12, 01:16 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Hello,

I have several LDs I'd like to get PCM audio off of, including the first LD of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which has the mono mix - it doesn't say it's digital on the box but LDDB says it has digital, and my friend with an LD player was able to toggle the soundtrack to "Digital" - though the player only has analog out). I also wanted to get a PCM capture of the Image Entertainment "The Superman Cartoons of Max and Dave Fleischer" to fix the audio problems on the WB masters (released on DVD/BD in SD and on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service in HD). However, I don't know of anybody in the USA who can do bit-perfect PCM capturing. Can anybody here other than BusterD capture bit-perfect PCM, who I could have the LDs sent to?

Thanks for any help.

  firewire: problems and solutions
Posted by: spoRv - 2021-09-11, 01:22 PM - Forum: Capture and rip - Replies (6)

Must admit that nowadays firewire isn't used widely anymore - apart Thunderbolt, but it's still a niche connection.

BUT... indeed it could be handy for someone who would like to get a cheap and good audio interface to capture laserdisc tracks and not only.

The main problem is, most of all the motherboards released in the last few years, there is no firewire, so you are forced to buy a PCI-E card to get it; still, some of these can have sync problems.

According to several posts I read on various problem, the best way to avoid problems using a PCI-E firewire interface with audio cards is to choose one using Texas Instrument chipsets; in particular, the latest one using the XIO2213B.

AVOID the cheap few-bucks chinese cards as they do not use TI chipsets!

Such kind of cards cost around 35/40€; bad thing is, they come without a cable, so you need a 9pin/6pic cable that usually cost further 15/20€, setting the price of the whole set up to 50/60€! So take this in account if you are planning to buy an old firewire audio card, as the whole connection set could could a big fraction of the card itself!

There is another way, though: buy an old iMac!

It could be found for peanuts now; any Intel based one could record several dozen tracks without a problem, and it's possible to add more interfaces easily to get more channels, without having problems like you probably get using the PC!

Sure, two computers (and monitors) take more space than one, but having one dedicated only to audio capture could be useful; then, if you can also got a video capture card working in that same iMac... Big Grin

Suspiria (2018) stylized subtitles reproduction (timed to DE BD/UHD)
Posted by: Scavenger - 2021-09-11, 12:37 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (2)

Wasn't sure in which subforum to post it in.

ASS and PGS format soft-subtitle reproduction of the original burnt-in stylized English subtitles as seen in the English prints, timed to the German Koch Media BD without the burnt-in subtitles (should also work with the German UHD). The English prints have subtitles for German dialogue with a red dropshadow and French dialogue with a blue dropshadow. Available via PM

I've tried to replicate the subtitles closely and I used a BDRip of the US release as a reference, but keep in mind that the typesetting and positioning are not 100% perfect (for instance, ASS does not have proper support for vertical spacing). Still, I'm happy with the result which I feel is superior to Koch Media's attempt with its red translucent background and single dropshadow color.

Probably the most faithful option would be to blend in the subtitled areas from the US/UK BDs with DE BD. May try and track down a copy of the AU BD to see if that has the burnt-in subtitles and good encoding (video bitrate is 31989 kbps, so could be good).

Reproduction ASS | Reproduction PGS | Koch Media BD PGS | Original subtitles

French dialogue - notice the typo in Koch Media BD subtitles

One scene where for some reason the red dropshadow is briefly brighter, which I've mimicked in my reproduction.

Hi folks

Just discovered this site but been a long time member of Original Trilogy & Fanedit.org and a supporter of fan edits/restorations in general for years now.

Keen to learn about all of the interesting projects you guys are working on as I find the effort of most more than that of the studios that produce and release these movies/tv shows etc.

Anyway, hope to say hello and support your projects soon.

Thoughts on the trailer?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ix7TUGVYIo

I have to say it looks better than I expected (I expect nothing these days), but I still think it won't be good.

Some of the graphics in the trailer look rather underwhelming imo even compared to the original. Like the one where the city is made out of numbers around him. Looks like a video game.

Another color matching tool - Match color.io

So I saw this flash up on facebook of all places:

Not tried it myself, to export 3D LUTs you need the paid pro version and despite some issues from time to time, I'm more than happy with Dr Dre. But it's potentially another option for people.
