Hello everyone! I finally got around to joining the forum, I remember lurking on the other site forum.fanres back before this site existed. Now I mostly specialize in upscales and have shared a fair amount on another private forum. I am making an account here not only to check out some of the projects I am highly interested in, but to potentially contribute myself. Big Grin

  Ransom Extended Version
Posted by: alleycat - 2023-01-22, 12:23 AM - Forum: Released - Replies (22)

When Ransom was released on Laserdisc it contained an additional 18 minutes of footage. That version has never been released on any other format. Whilst the DVD release contained some deleted scenes, they only ran for 4 minutes and were cropped 4:3.

For this project a friend captured the US Laserdisc on a Domesday setup and sent me the video. I then went several stages of processing in Avisynth including deinterlacing, decimating, cropping, cleaning, dehaloing, chroma noise removal and upscaling. That footage was then processed in Phoenix to remove instances of dust/dirt. There was then some light processing in Topaz and finally regraining in After Effects.

@zoidberg also captured the US Laserdisc for me and in some instances I used that footage instead. There was one short in particular that looked really bad on the Domesday version, so having two different captures allowed me to mix and match. Also, both versions had different colors so I was able to merge these for certain scenes.

This additional footage was then inserted into the Blu Ray footage to recreate the Extended release. Expectations need to be set here; LD footage is never going to seamless integrate with Blu Ray footage. I have tried my very best to make the footage look as good as possible, but I feel that overprocessing low quality footage is often worse.

The Blu Ray footage was adjusted slightly so that it better matched the LD footage. Fortunately most of the additional footage is completely independent, so it is less jarring on the eyes when it occurs. Overall I was very pleased with how it came out, I’ve been working on this for the last few months and I’m specifically looking for errors when I watch it, so hopefully others will be able to enjoy it for what it is.

In terms of audio, @zoidberg was able to capture both the PCM and the AC3 tracks from the Laserdisc. And my friend with the Domesday setup managed to capture the DTS track from the Japanese Laserdisc – so we have a complete audio offering.

The English subtitles were also a challenge as the additional footage has obviously never been subtitled before. So the blu ray subtitles were cut up and the extra footage transcribed line by line – that part was pretty time consuming.

Finally in terms of extras there is everything from the DVD, including one deleted scene that isn’t actually in the Extended Version, and some interviews from YouTube.

Once again, massive thanks to @zoidberg and my Domesday friend, without them this project would have never happened.

Cobra (1986, Sylvester Stallone), Film Whisperer extended version
Posted by: The Film Whisperer - 2023-01-19, 10:52 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (8)

Please check out my other projects, via the link in my signature! And PM me for link requests!
Do you believe in what I do? I appreciate donations (links/info in my signature)

Hello FanRes,

I did this project for a friend, but I figured I'd share it anyways. And I'm probably not the only one on this website to have done this project. But...what the heck. Compare mine with others and tell me what you think!

Specs
File
  • MKV, 16.82 GB
  • H.264 codec
  • True 24fps frame rate and speed, NOT the HD frame rate of 23.976fps.

Audio
  • 5.1 Dolby TrueHD
  • Combination of the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track from the blu-ray version and a 2.0 Dolby Digital track from the TV version. I made sure that transitions were as smooth and seamless as possible.

About the Project

Prior to its theatrical release in 1986, the original cut of Cobra was over two hours. However, the producers were worried that Top Gun (which was released before Cobra) would still overshadow the film. So they demanded that it be cut down as much as possible so that it could get more screen times in the day.

Stallone himself was heavily involved in the editing process. From what I've read, most scenes involving other characters were cut, except the scenes of himself  Big Grin

If you're reading this thread, you're probably aware of the existence of a TV version which has about 6 additional minutes of footage. I combined the blu-ray version with the extended TV version.

The TV version censored many parts, both in audio and video. So if the TV version censored parts, I used the blu-ray version. Wink In fact, my version is LONGER than the TV version!

APOLOGIES: The source I used for the TV version was not that great. It was PAL formatted (which wasn't an issue). However, it had a lot of "noise", and I don't have DNR capabilities. And keep in mind that color-correcting/color-blending is a bit difficult with such a LQ source.

I had to resync the audio on the TV version I had, because for some reason audio was WAY out of sync.

Also, my source for the TV version had Swedish subtitles. And it has a big "4" on the top right corner (indicating a TV-channel).

2+hr Workprint?
I remember reading somewhere that a 2+hr work print had leaked, and is now rare. Do any of you have it? And if so, would you like to share?!

Anyways, PM me if you want the project. Also PM me if you think you have any better sources for the TV cut. But if you have that 2-hr work print...oh boy that would be awesome.
