Help. Lookin for this Universal Logo in HD
Posted by: monks19 - 2020-04-17, 06:32 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Hello people. I'm looking for a HD version of this Universal logo (from 1923 to 1927, by all accounts, it was in the DVD version of The Cat and The Canary -1927 -from Kino-Lorber). Does anyone knows if this logo is on a Bluray somewhere or in HD (1080p/i) form anywhere ? If so, where can I find it, please ?

Thanks to answer

Music "PAL speedup" pitch shift... on Blu-ray?!
Posted by: pipefan413 - 2020-04-17, 12:59 AM - Forum: Audio and video editing - Replies (12)

So... I've discovered something extremely unsettling on a few Blu-rays lately and it doesn't make any sense to me.

The first one was my German copy of SNOWPIERCER. I was working on a sort of "ultimate remux" of sorts with my own newly-translated English subtitles (in both SRT and PGS format) and checking all the sources I have to ascertain which elements to use, and I was alarmed to discover that the German disc has exactly the sort of "PAL speedup" pitch shift you'd expect from an old-fashioned PAL (and thus 25 fps) DVD. However, it's got a framerate of 23.976 fps (24000/1001)! I thought maybe they're done something shonky to do with using audio from a master created for the German DVD or something (Germany being PAL etc.) and moved on with my life. After all, the Korean, American, and French Blu-rays were absolutely fine and had consistently lower pitch than the German audio. Weird anomaly, but no biggie, right?

The thing is though, now, I'm working on another one of my favourite films: NEAR DARK. I have many copies of this one as well: the much maligned US/UK BD, one from Spain, and the most recent one from France, as well as my old 2-disc Anchor Bay DVD copy, which is of course PAL (running at 25 fps, presumably with the associated speedup and resulting heightened pitch). The DVD has a director commentary that isn't on any BD release, so I was going to correct the PAL speedup on that and mux it into the French BD video track when I discovered 2 very confusing things:

  1. The PAL DVD audio was not pitch-shifted upwards, as the music is in the same key as the soundtrack CD

  2. On the contrary, the DVD audio is actually lower in pitch than all three of the Blu-ray releases, consistent across every audio track on each release. All the BDs have the pitch shifted too high, the same as German Snowpiercer!

This explains why the audio has always felt weird when I've watch the film on Blu-ray. I'm flummoxed, though. What the hell could have caused this?!

Anybody got any ideas?

[SUPERCEDED BY 35MM PRESERVATION] The Keep (1983) [Project: Celluloid]
Posted by: LucasGodzilla - 2020-04-15, 07:31 AM - Forum: Archived projects - Replies (1)

PROJECT CELLULOID: Michael Mann's The Keep
So amidst the mess outside, I've been screwing around a bit with the HDTV upscale of The Keep and decided to try and regrade it to what it probably would have looked like on 35mm.

The main problem though was the trailer source I color matched to led to some real funky colors sometimes due to the noticeable fading. As such, in order to fix the issues it led to, I had to take some liberties, leading to a stronger blue push throughout rather than the faded burgundies. Whether or not this is accurate is up for debate, however it can be argued that it does work much to the movie's favor in helping to bolster its dream-like atmosphere at times than the warmer, magenta-pushed colors seen on the HDTV master and the semi-corrected version Sporv released with his Fundamental Collection (Not to mention Mann has been known for pushing blues in his films apparently). So take it as you may, it's just an alternate way to see the movie either way now I guess lol

However, although I consider the grade itself to be done since there's not much I can do unless I suddenly get a better, unfaded source than the trailer posted above, there's still some work to be done on the master itself. Namely, there are some interlacing issues that need to be fixed, and TomArrow has suggested to me the idea of downscaling this blow-up and smart upscaling it back up in an attempt to fake some detail hopefully rather than just blobby smeariness. Once I get that in order, I hope to re-grain it, see if it can be synced with LD audio perhaps, and then go through the final export steps.

Side note, a real shame no proper HD master of the movie exists. I've heard some mentionings at times of people attempting to do a 35mm print preservation of the movie on a few different forums but those attempts never seemed to go anywhere either. So out of sheer curiosity, who would actually donate to see such a restoration effort for this movie?

  Hitchcock original audio thread
Posted by: captainsolo - 2020-04-14, 02:56 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (24)

This thread is for original audio on Hitchcock titles. This has been inspired by today’s discovery: certain Hitchcock films were released in Japan on LD with digital audio as the last part of the “Hitchcock library” collection!

I’ve been able to verify so far: Blackmail, Rebecca and...Vertigo. The latter two I just unboxed and checked out. Vertigo is the same master as the analog only pan n scan USA LD but with a pcm mono track that sounds like the dvd and bd track but so far to my ears better...

Now to fly and get a capture device stat...

  Tracking down theatrical mixes
Posted by: allldu - 2020-04-10, 11:48 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (27)

Hi guys,

I'm trying to track down a number of original theatrical mixes I'd like to sync to the UHDs that don't have them, and I would really appreciate this community expertise on the subject. Also, if you have any of them and are willing to share it with me, I'd gladly except the challenge of syncing them and share with everybody when done.

So here goes:

A FEW GOOD MEN - LD has Dolby Surround (original mix or the closest to it?)
SCHINDLER'S LIST - Cinema DTS (blu ray has DTS-HD MA 5.1, is this the original or near fielfd remix?)
BRAVEHEART - Dolby True HD 5.1 on blu ray could be the original DD (did it have DTS cinema?)
THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK - LD has DTS (original mix?)
THE BIG LEBOWSKI - Cinema DTS (blu ray has DTS-HD MA 5.1, is this the original or near fielfd remix?)
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - Cinema DTS? (blu ray's DTS-HD MA 5.1 is supposedly inferior both to DTS on DVD and cinema DTS)
THE MUMMY - Cinema DTS?
GLADIATOR - Cinema DTS, it's somewhere out there...
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (Jim Carrey) - Cinema DTS?

Thanks guys, any help of getting a hold of these would be very much appreciated.

Another project complete. The blu ray has drastically different colours when compared to the laserdisc so I have colour corrected it scene by scene, using over 50 Dr Dre LUTs and slightly adjusting the contrast levels in Premiere.

  • BD25 with animated menus that look and behave like the official Criterion discs, with a background video, pop up menus and resume function
  • Video taken from the official Blu Ray, with scene by scene colour correction
  • Original chapter stops used on the Laserdisc
  • English 2.0 from the Laserdisc (Thanks Alexpeden and Zoidberg!)
  • Two Criterion audio commentary tracks taken from Laserdisc
  • English, French, German and Spanish Subtitles
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Making Of A Menace: Introduction
  • Interview With The Hughes Brothers
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Storyboards
  • Film To Story Comparison
  • Shooting the Korean Grocery Store Scenes
  • Film School
  • 2Pac Brenda's Got A Baby Music Video
  • Raw Fusion Throw Your Hands In The Air Music Video
  • Laserdisc Production Credits

Adding "Hidden tracks" to a Blu-ray
Posted by: Dr. Cooper - 2020-04-10, 04:48 PM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (8)

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a Blu-ray-authoring with Encore and got a little problem with it:
Unfortunately Encore isn't able to handle HD-tracks properly and it also can't mix AC3/DTS with PCM on one disc. So I just used a heavily compressed dummy in Encore and replaced it by using Booshman's tutorial.

Everything went fine, but now there's another issue that I couldn't solve yet:
Encore only allows 8 audio-tracks, but I'd actually like to put 14 tracks on the disc. Due to the issue that track 9-14 won't be available on the menu eitherway, because they can't be linked in Encore, I just wanted to add them as "hidden tracks" which will only play by using the "Audio"-button on the remote when playing the disc. However, it didn't work. After burning the disc only the first 8 tracks can be selected and the others are just ignored. All four players I've tested don't even seem to recognize them, as they say there are only 8 audio-streams available.

Is there any way to get around this?

Thanks in advance for your help! Ok

Three Days of the Condor (1975) LD Mono

I don't think the original mono mix has been released anywhere on DVD or Blu-ray. So does anyone have the LD captured?

Face / Off and Broken Arrow
Posted by: CSchmidlapp - 2020-04-09, 06:46 PM - Forum: In progress - Replies (38)

Original Thread / Post

Quote:Hi Fan Ressers.

I'm wondering if somebody could help me Smile

I'm looking for the best version of the original 2.0 surround mix of Face / Off.
I have a version on the R1 DVD but its DD compressed and I'm guessing the best version available will be on a laserdisc somewhere.
Ive never had a Laserdisc player and thus my knowledge on what are the best versions of discs ect is zero!

EDIT: Ive updated the thread title to cover Broken Arrow and all the audio mixes in general Wink

What began as a request for the original 2.0 mix of Face/Off has become a project for both this and Broken Arrow.

Over the past year Ive been playing around with and using AVIsynth scripts to watch my films in my collection that just need small corrections.
This began with 25fps slowdown to 23.976, clean up with upscale on my DVD's to 'red' removal on old HD masters that has been discussed all over this forum.

Over the past few months I pushed the Color Correction to try an emulate what I had learnt about 35mm print characteristic's.
Once again debated over this forum it does seem to suggest that alot of the more 'Teal' transfers are indeed more accurate to there Theatrical presentation.

So....

Broken Arrow

The MPEG 2 Encoded BD transfer has a very pinkish push to it.
Ive removed that but pushed alittle further as I play.
I have no idea if what I have done is even close to how it looked in the cinema! But I do much prefer this look.

VIDEO:

AUDIO:

DTS-HD.MA 5.1 "from the Bluray"
DTS 5.1 "from the DTS Laserdisc" Thanks Zoidberg
PCM 2.0 surround mix "from the Laserdisc" Thanks Zoidberg

More details TBA

Face / Off

Ive used the VC1 encoded 'Russian' BLU and top and tailed it with the 'Paramount' logo taken from the Braveheart UHD
Once again the transfer leaned toward red but not nearly as much at Broken Arrow.
My opinion on the results are the same as on Broken Arrow.

VIDEO:

AUDIO:

PCM 5.1 "from the BD"
DTS-ES 6.1 "from the US BD. Im assuming this is the same at the DD-EX mix included on this disc)
PCM 2.0 Surround "from the Laserdisc" Recieved and synced, Thanks Zoidberg
x2 commentary tracks "from the US BD"

More details TBA

I will update this post as the project progresses.
I do have some Work In Progress renders (mentioned through the tread) should any long time members be interested in viewing.
They have been rendered using my AMD RX480's Hardware encoder to low bitrate H264 videos with DD+ 5.1 audio.
They come in around 8 to 10gb a piece.
