Blade Runner (1982): color-timing; different versions; audio mixes
Posted by: Chewtobacca - 2017-05-12, 12:35 AM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - Replies (30)

This thread about the 1982 film, not the 2017 one. Please start another thread to discuss that.

I'm primarily interested in the look of the film, the differences between versions, and the various audio mixes.  While the the color-cast found on the branching BD is the beginning of the revisionism seen in the FC, it is relatively light, and it's possible to remove it and leave something that approaches the look of the first DVD (but without the awful pink/red look).

In fact, my suspicion is that once the cast is removed, the branching BD comes fairly close to the film's original look(s).  I also think that, pre-FC, the film was rather inconsistent when it comes to color: the shots of the city at night are quite nice, but all the scenes in the Bradbury building look drab, the part in which Deckard interrogates Rachel is a nasty red (far better in the FC), and the scenes in Deckard's apartment don't gel particularly well with the appearance of the rest of the film (especially the light that spills in through the windows).

Don't get me wrong: I love the production and share the common view that the FC went too far in its revisionism; it's just that I feel that it had a point too, which was that the film needed a more consistent image, one that would play into its futuristic setting.  If you focus on objects that are less affected by the teal and orange, the colors often appear quite rich and striking.  And some scenes could use a tint.

I've heard that the 5.1 on the branching BD has some changes from the '92 DC.  Does anyone have any information about this?

Exclamation projects sandbox
Posted by: spoRv - 2017-05-11, 11:57 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (132)

I think we need a thread were to post random thoughts about our projects - future, past, in progress - without cluttering the eventual proper threads... a place also to ask for opinion, throw ideas... so, if something would not be actually used in this or that project, it will stay only here!

I start: lately I'm thinking to put apart color regrading, you know, just to change something, and continue with open matte - as it seems there is some interest in this, apart from me, obviously!

Some projects in the drawer are almost ready, but they are too... easy Wink so I wanted something more challenging... there are, of course, open matte DVDs that were (and will be) upscaled to HD, but there are other sources that still need a good upscale; I'm thinking about several 720p, that could benefit of a bit of cleaning...

So, here you are my last attempt; Deep Rising open matte 720p, and BD screenshots from blu-ray.com:

https://s2.postimg.cc/9a1f41wax/Deep_Ris...ouched.png
https://s2.postimg.cc/hpme7t9s9/Deep_Ris...hanced.png
https://s2.postimg.cc/fv9jq2mrt/Deep_Rising_Blu-ray.png

Here you can see that enhanced version is almost on par with Blu-ray (maybe due to downscaled BD image; further tests are needed)

https://s2.postimg.cc/nrymc1nm1/Deep_Ris...nced_2.png
https://s2.postimg.cc/3uo3pcfd5/Deep_Ris...-ray_2.png

Here, at the contrary, the Blu-ray it's quite better, in particular if you zoom in to see better the details; but this is expected in a shot like this, with all these tiny particulars that are lost in the source due lower resolution and bitrate; but make a comparison between the untouched and the enhanced; Avisynth doesn't stop to amaze me everytime!

  The Lost Room
Posted by: whatchitfoool - 2017-05-10, 09:49 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (1)

The Lost Room (2006) had a rubbish dvd release back in the day.  So of course the best going around for awhile were HDTV rips.
the best rip that I ever found is around 4.3gb per part (1 of 3),.Im away from my main computer to check the details of the files.

Does anyone know of a better copy?  EDIT: I know a new webrip as appeared within the last year or so.  Good to finally see it at least streaming for the public.
I'll get the amzn webrip and compare to the sources.
The mini-series is absolutely fantastic BTW for anyone that hasn't seen it.

Video New Back to The Future transfer

This is all hypothetical and best case.
Lets suppose we on the forums could bend the ear of Universal, and had to put a presentation together on why and how BTTF should get a new transfer from their best source.
what would be in the presentation, in full detail?

all 3 parts were shot open matte, and all struck prints are the same.
I would assume their current best source is the IP print that already has already been physically "cleaned and polished" (for the 25th bluray).

a standard 35mm print would have about 2k of detail, so a 4k scan would capture all of it.
The Inter-Positive, maybe 3-4k detail. 8k open matte transfer would be preferred (but would never happen). so 4k scan for a UHD release.

Of course, the thing to get is a digital "Backup" of all the negatives in 16k. at ~100 lines/mm,  the negatives hold about 7-8k of information.  16k scan would be ideal then for the capture before any further damage happens to the negative.

I'm currently trying to make an improved version of the Director's Cut of this movie with the best sources available.
You guys have amazing projects here, it's impressive.
Good day to all !

Im looking for advice on manipulating the most detail out of screen shots. Im talking items in the background, text on objects, physical properties, ect.
Currently, im using virtualDub to extract frames in TARGA. I then take it into photopshop and save it as a TIF, and work with it from there.

Id like to be able to enlarge parts of the frame (or the whole frame) for peeping digitally, or maybe even for a large format print.  Ive tried some SR but havn't had great results. I've read on SR and understand the theory,  but could use any input on practical applications and software to use.

Anyone have any input on the matter?

  Guardians (2017)
Posted by: spoRv - 2017-05-09, 12:28 AM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - No Replies

Used to watch the modern superheroes Hollywood movies, I stumbled across this Russian movie; the trailer seemed interesting, so I decided to watch it.

WOW! Considering that it's a Russian production, with a presumedly budget of only 5M$, result is astounding!

Far from perfection, of course, but really enjoyable; some fresh air in the superheroes films, not original, and have various similarity with US movies; casting is spot-on - the military woman is gorgeous - and acting is pretty decent; CGI too is not bad, always considering the budget - OK, bear it's actually quite weak, but almost on par with, for example, Underworld, to gives you an idea; action, fun, the ingredients are all there, even the small scenes after the end credits are started.

Is it good? Well, in comparison to the overly politically involved (and quite boring in several parts) Captain America: Civil War, I'd say yes! Not a masterpiece, it's clear, but an honest, well done superheroes flick. I'm certain that many "US-centric" movie lovers will disrespect it, because it's not on par with American mega productions... but, let's face it, at a tiny fraction of their cost - less than 5%, I guess - the budget/quality ratio here is incredibly high, a level of magnitude higher than any US blockbusters...
