[Cancelled] Mad Max 2/Road Warrior Regrade (Warner 97 DVD and LD)
#41
It's great to see them all side by side like that, good work PDB. I agree that the saturation is a little weak on the laser captures, but the colour balance is spot on - bring a little of your own good judgement and we should have a damn-near definitive version.

As a side note, does anyone know anything about the transfer Shout Factory are using for their release of the original?

Jonno, I think it's probably a good idea that for the sake of creating as much of a collaborative environment as possible between releasers here on fanres, that we refrain from calling releases that fit our personal preferences 'definitive' because it is disrespectful to other releasers here on fanres that have worked on the same film and creates division rather than unity.

kk, you are right... think about the Star Wars Definitive Collection laserdisc boxset... it was huge, it was special, it was full of extras... but it was NOT definitive at all! Big Grin

Well, I can only comment on what's in front of me and as a longtime enthusiast of this film I'd gladly support any project that aims to restore it to its proper glory - PDB's appears to be the only game in town right now, but if (presumably) you would like to start a thread of your own work on the title I'd be pleased to see it.

My PCM audio sync will (eventually) be available to anyone who can use it, by the way!

I have actually already released a regraded version of Mad Max 2 myself, though not restoring the DVD/LD colours shot by shot like PDB is planning to do here. Its very kind of you to offer to share the PCM audio track you're creating with everybody jonno so thank you, I would be very happy to take you up on that.

The point i'm making is that no fan release should ever be called 'definitive' IMHO, only a release supervised and released by the filmmakers themselves could legitimately claim that and even then, as we've sadly seen too often, they seem to change their minds after a few years, as evidenced by the revisionist colour grading of certain catalog releases like FOTR EE and the Star Wars Original Trilogy.

I think we as collaborators should avoid falling into the trap of claiming our own prefered versions are 'definitive' and thereby artificially raising our own prefered fan releases over that of others out there and alienating those that disagree, creating disunity. I would like to avoid that here at fanres and make everyone feel comfortable enough to contribute, i'm sure Andrea would agree with me there. Lets just help each other out and try to create the highest quality releases possible, no need to claim that one release is more 'definitive' than any other when they all have different objectives and offer different things.

Well they do are definitive for some of us. Like your version of 007 YOLT, which is the only one I can watch.

kk, I agree, and I'm sure everyone here think the same; we are a little (for the moment) community, ready to help each other; but you must admit it's rewarding to know someone would watch one's restoration instead a commercial release... it means that one made a good job... and, if he/she claims is the definitive edition, what I might suggest is to write something like "this is MY definitive edition"... the only definitive thing in life is... death... maybe! Thanks Stamper, i'm glad you like what I did with YOLT. Are you refering to the technicolor release of YOLT or the first one I did?

I would personally never use the word 'definitive' to describe any of my releases or anybody elses though, just my prefered way of watching a film I like. Compliments are great and very much appreciated by us releasers to motive us but 'definitive' is one of those double edged compliments that raise one release while pulling down all others of the same film which is unnecessary IMHO, thats why it makes me uncomfortable when I hear it because it has the potential to annoy other releasers/users when collaboration is what we want to encourage here. I would like to see this site be as inclusive as possible so it attracts new users and releasers with different viewpoints and flourishes.

Yes I agree Andrea it is a satisfying feeling, though as we've both agreed in the past, ultimately whats most important is that you as a releaser are happy with what you've done. Saying "this is MY definitive edition" is definately fine though because it is voicing a personal preference rather than saying 'this is THE definitive edition' which is of course a statement of fact that has the potential to offend and alienate those that disagree.

Sorry about the tangent PDB, lets get back to your Mad Max 2 release. The colours on the LD screencaps I definately prefer to the DVD but they do seem overly bright so I would definately suggest you reduce the brightness to just a little bit brighter than the DVD brightness level.

Well I'm glad that's done, I can erase my lengthly thread response. I'm not a stickler for being on topic but perhaps we can get back on topic now.

Thanks again Jonno for all your help

Purposefully ignoring the help of experienced releasers is a very childish way to act PDB. Of course for you its not the first time.

Cut the victim act, lose the ego, grow up and try to remember that you're a Mod that supposed to be promoting collaboration in this forum, not division. Try to live up to the trust that Andrea placed in you by making you super mod.
