@bronan, I'd like to give an update on the issue I first reported in post #113.

Apparently it was a combination of some lines being too big in length and duration with no gap inbetween them. It was messing up the whole sub somehow, but giving them some room to breathe was enough to fix it. So the problem was with the .ass file, as you suspected.

Thanks once again for the tool and the assistance.

Great! I've been thinking about that no gap problem as it struck me on the Super Mario Bros animated movie we've been messing with. I think it should be possible to add an option to sub2bd to pre-process the ASS to detect that and add appropriate gaps. Did you find what gap length worked well? I can make that adjustable of course.

The gaps I used vary from as little as 150ms to as much as 3s. I think is just a matter of separating lines that are too long, by any length.

For what its worth, SubtitleEdit has a "fix common errors" function to manage gaps, but it seemed to only improve existing gaps rather than adding new ones. It does warn to shorten long lines, which I ignored because I was captioning long on-screen texts (a star wars crawl, to be specific), and considered solely that it wouldn't affect the viewing experience.

So few people should run into this. Its actually better practice to skip a few frames between lines, so that's a mistake I wont repeat in the future.

Hmm, I came across some subtitles that caused the program (or maybe avs2bdnxml.exe) to hang, looks like it might be due to emoji being included, like the following pictogram sometimes used in Japanese captions to show when a line is coming from a phone or speaker:
📢
(also attached a test file that includes these)
Would it be too difficult to add support for these?  It's a pretty niche use case and I can always use a text editor to quickly replace them, so no big deal if it's too much trouble or if it's due to avs2bdnxml.exe.

Hm interesting... Do you have that font "MS Pゴシック" installed on your system? Avisynth could possibly be falling back to a font that doesn't include the character. I'd suggest trying to run the .avs script that is created by sub2bd (located in same folder as the .exe) and see what it looks like in AVS. Interested to know if its rendering correctly at all there. avs2bdnxml takes the frame rendered by AVS and breaks it down into image chunks, so I don't think it really cares what's on the screen per se.

Thanks for the response Bronan. Yeah, that's a pretty common Japanese font from Microsoft, I believe. The emoji seems to render OK in AegiSub, also tried a different font, but still getting hangs.

I only get an error when I try to load the script in VirtualDub, but I also get an error for an .ass file that does work, so I'm probably missing something. Re-installed AviSynth, but same issue.

I attached the script and .ass temp file if you'd like to take a look, but no big deal either way.

Tried opening the script you sent and AVS was hanging forever trying to loading it. As soon as I removed the emojis, it loaded right up. It's possible this is a VSFilter.dll issue, it's what loads and displays the subtitle in AVS. I was actually thinking of swapping it out with something newer since the latest build is over 10 years old at this point. Will do some more research soon.
