I this might be it. Theres definitely a full super35 scan of the film at New Line, but no guarantee that its ever been distributed in a 16:9 format. I think the scope image deliberately was framed 16:9 safe to start with.

However, the framing on this master not very 4:3 safe. I couldnt imagine this being played 10 years ago where a HDTV channel could be center cut for SD. It is plausible that back in the early days of 16:9 tv, another full frame 16:9 master was made with slightly wider framing, possibly in standard def for PAL widescreen TV.

With a full top to bottom, open matte, no crop of that shot of Boromir. And that is a shot that would do fine pan and scanned from the scope print. Surely someone has a recording of that.

It's always possible that it was broadcasted in two versions - one properly open matte (even if not always full), and another mostly cropped. Probably it's not the case, but it's still possible.

Also fellowship might be different to two towers and rotk. Fellowship being finished only partially with a DI while the others are full DI

The LOTR movies were shot in the super35 format, in which the 2.35:1 ratio is cropped from a 4:3 ratio on the negative, ...

The next and last page notes this:

The film was framed on-set for 2.35:1 (though Peter Jackson allegedly made sure that Lesnie made the film "broadcast-safe" when it was shot, meaning that it could be safely reframed for 1.33:1 or 1.78:1 when shown on television), it was shown in theatres at 2.35:1, and all previous home video releases have been 2.35:1.

The recording I have does have this framing for this shot.

Can you post any more "random" shots to indicate open-matte throughout?

I recorded it last month.
It's hard to find any at least partially opened shots throughout the film.
Except the last 30 minutes that for some reasons seems to be more opened than cropped.

Awesome! what's the second one like? is it just as open or does it appear cropped?

I was told that one person checked the second and third parts of the lord of the rings and said that the Open Matte scenes there are only about 2 minutes in each film. But in the first part about 40 minutes.
