I this might be it. Theres definitely a full super35 scan of the film at New Line, but no guarantee that its ever been distributed in a 16:9 format. I think the scope image deliberately was framed 16:9 safe to start with.
However, the framing on this master not very 4:3 safe. I couldnt imagine this being played 10 years ago where a HDTV channel could be center cut for SD. It is plausible that back in the early days of 16:9 tv, another full frame 16:9 master was made with slightly wider framing, possibly in standard def for PAL widescreen TV.

It's always possible that it was broadcasted in two versions - one properly open matte (even if not always full), and another mostly cropped. Probably it's not the case, but it's still possible.

Also fellowship might be different to two towers and rotk. Fellowship being finished only partially with a DI while the others are full DI

I was told that one person checked the second and third parts of the lord of the rings and said that the Open Matte scenes there are only about 2 minutes in each film. But in the first part about 40 minutes.
