Only German BD is missing there, but as you can see, the image is more on the okay side, than on the great side...

I guess an upscaled DVD will be hardly better than a BD...

I read a review on a forum where the buyer said the UK DVD is open matte and the Blu is just the same with top and bottom chopped off.

There's differences in framing between the jap/german Blu and the new jap/US.

The original jap shows way more image on top and left, that you can almost frame it for scope and have the same top as the newjap/US see the caps where he nails the guy to the wall on DVDbeaver.

If there was the possibility of juxtaposing both images, we would be able to get maybe a more generous looking master.

If you watch closely, the jap/german are framed with more generous top and some more left info, whereas the newjap/US are framed with more bottom, and some cropping on the left.

The technique exists (AAP-AR) but, until the framing is exactly the same for the whole movie, it is really hard to align the two versions... an open matte DVD upscale is possible, though.

Avoid the new Japanese release of The Crow. Even though it's touted as a 4K remaster, it's in fact the same transfer as the US but with loads more banding and looks worse (IMHO)

Yep, old japanese or German is the best.

Here's the difference between open matte and widescreen japanese re: The Crow.

http://hpics.li/73abaa1

Since the japanese as too much picture on the left compared to the US, we can deduct it's true open matte, with the japanese showing too much picture that is / was intended for the soundtrack (it's a constant on open matte shot film with spherical lenses, there's always that left side where some image is captured, that was never intended to be seen)

The Crow was originaly slated as a DTV film (just like Reservoir Dogs was) so I think this is the real format of the film. The sound mix by the way kills all Blu-ray remixes out there. The dynamic range is great! Thanks to Zoidberg for the file!

My pleasure. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this DVD, especially the audio. The video reminds me of the good old days of analogue satellite like sky movies. If anyone else is interested in this release PM me.
