I recall downloading a HDTV version of this and finding it was cropped instead of open matte. I don’t think it was filmed Super35

The HDTV is cropped, even if, to say the truth, it has a slightly more details top and/or bottom. And, the color grading is different from BD.

The Blu of Armageddon came from a new master as the existing master was destroyed in a fire. But yes it was shot anamorphic

Does a HD version of the Directors cut exist?

Interesting. Didn't know all this about a burned master etc. Seems there are quite a few different scenes in the new one. And the Director's Cut only appeared on Criterion. Hm. Might be something for a restauration project I guess. Not me though, I'm too lazy and don't love the movie enough. Tongue

Edit: Now here's something strange I guess: Theatrical Cut (PAL): 144:40 min. (138:02 min), Director's Cut (NTSC): 153:14 min. (146:23 min)
The Blu Ray is 2h 30m. Does that mean it's even longer than the Director's Cut? Or .. what do those numbers in brackets mean? Without titles?

It could be either the conversion from NTSC to PAL or the run time without the ending credits.

If it hasn't turned up on HDTV/web-dl yet then I'd guess no. The best source is probably the PAL UK release with audio from the Criterion laserdisc.

The number in brackets seem to be the running time without endcredits... The 2:30 from the BD is the running time with credits (143:56 Min without endcredits) , so it is about 3 minutes shorter than the DC.

I believe the 2001 DVD of Tommy (1975) is open-matte; the Special Edition and Blu-ray are both widescreen. Pictures to follow.

Images for comparison... Blu-ray overlaid on top of DVD screengrabs.

This DVD appears to be a direct untouched transfer, although it doesn't have the original "Quintaphonic" soundtrack (I believe the BD has). Might actually be a good contender for the Upscale Project - what do you think, PDB?
