[Cancelled] Mad Max 2/Road Warrior Regrade (Warner 97 DVD and LD)
(2021-11-16, 08:25 PM)Stamper Wrote: As someone noted on another board, this guy scream is also missing in the remix:

According to a Blu user, the delay to remux the 5.1 track of the Blu-ray (which has the voices intact despite being a remix) is -991 ms.

The blu-ray's 5.1 track may be from the original 70mm mix.

Sounds as if Warner might be nudged into doing something about the audio:

Quote:Now then... that audio problem we mentioned: It appears that the Warner’s new 4K Ultra HD of Mad Max 2—which promised a new Dolby Atmos mix as well as the previous 5.1 and original 2.0 audio tracks—does indeed include a new Dolby Atmos mix. But that mix alters many sound effects and is missing a number of others. What’s more, the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks are not “original” but are in fact just fold-downs of the new Atmos mix—disappointing all the way around. We’ve just gotten the Mad Max Anthology in for review in 4K UHD here at The Bits, so we’ll dive into it soon and report back over the next day or two. But just be aware of the issue. Note that we’ve informed Warner Bros. Home Entertainment of it and they’ve confirmed that their tech team is looking into it. We’ll report back when we hear more.

Corrected the delay between the Blu-ray and UHD to -1001ms as someone correctly advised on another forum.

It appears Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is also afflicted with downmixed tracks from the new Dolby Atmos.

This was less obvious as the Atmos doesn't change the original sound effects.

From user mad_max2000:

Quote:FYI, for all those who are interested. I finally sat down to watch the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 4K all the way through and while the film thankfully has not been subjected to the same revisionist foley mixing that Mad Max 2 has, it appears that the 2.0 track on the MMBT 4K is also a downmix of the new Atmos track like with MM2 (and I'd be willing to bet the 5.1 is as well).

Several sounds have been pushed to the forefront of the mix and it doesn't match the sound of the 5.1 from the Blu Ray release.

Examples would be:

1. The music is subdued as Max approaches Bartertown for the first time. The wind is now so overpowering that the music threatens to lost in the mix

2. The buzzing of the Atmoic Cafe sign's flicking is now pushed to the front as well. On the Blu Ray's 5.1 it's heard as part of the ambiance of Bartertown. On the 4K mixes, it's overpowering to the point that it gets annoying. It sounds like a giant buzzing alarm in the middle of the track.

3. In the Thunderdome battle the sounds of Blaster's grunts have been buried and/or removed. Same with some of the snapping noises of Max cutting the bands on Blaster's harness.

4. I could be wrong about this so don't quote me, but I think the sound of Max punching out Savannah Nix at crack in the Earth has been silenced. I'll have to check the Blu Ray again this evening. But on the 4K tracks it sounds like a light scuffle and I remember it sounding like more of a traditional movie punch. EDIT: Just checked, the sound is the same on the Blu Ray. Please disregard.

Overall not happy that they decided to tinker with this film's track too and the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks do appear to be downmixes, but this is still nowhere near the sonic abortion that is the Mad Max 2 Atmos track and downmixes. Here at least the original foley is largely still present and Warner didn't try to make it feel more modern like with MM2. Not great, but not awful either.

If you have the old MM2 Blu-ray 5.1 and want to remux it with the UHD, you can use eac3to as follows to remove the plastered modern WB logo music and replace it with silence for the UHD's Saul Bass logo, and simultaneously achieve the proper delay:

Code:
eac3to input.dtshd output.dtshd -16000ms

eac3to input.dtshd output.dtshd +14997ms -silence

When remuxing, set a +2ms delay on the resulting dtshd file to get the timing as perfect as possible (-16000 + 14997 + 2 = -1001).

(Or PM me if you just want the file. Wink)

Looks like in the PQ section, this new anthology is 100% positive.

Now a user says the color timing of the first film, which IMHO was still botched on the Kino disc and not like the original (it was still graded close to the HD BR version which was the pits), is FIXED!

Now, the trilogy has 100% coherent to the original colors timing!!!

Given Warner's "we're looking into it" comment I wouldn't be surprised if a fix is issued some time soon ala Universal's Psycho.

They will just change the menus, they won't change the tracks

Maybe give them the benefit of the doubt? I know this studio hasn't always always had the best reputation for maintaining accuracy, but the work that's gone into the picture shows that they're trying to make an effort with this project. This may be a genuine gesture to get it in line with what was initially promised.
