Regarding the DCPs, it's difficult to know for sure without some way of obtaining screen shots. The human eye is very good at auto white balancing especially in low ambient light situations ie a movie theatre. I agree that the remastered Blu has a strangely low white level (even in bright scenes) as well as the green tint. Quite a few releases have this which begs the question: technical gaffe or artistic intent?
Now, back to the 35mm prints...

Its more like Terminator was correctly color timed and then a green filter was added to the whole thing (like Aliens but not as extreme). Once was with pics of the BD with me and the last time with the actual Blu-ray video with me, played in sync. And the last time was a month or so ago in IMAX laser projection in a double feature with Alien for Sci-Fi Sundays. The DCP is far less green and looks more "natural". I have no idea if it is true to 35mm prints but it is much better looking then the BD. Also it is definitely the same master since it has all the fixes and same grain. (I'm also seeing Blade Runner: The final Cut on DCP this month. I saw the 35mm print when it made the rounds years ago and it didn't have a green tint but, memories being what they are, I want to confirm by watching the DCP.) I try to do my homework

I'm really unexperienced with color grading, it would be my first experience, I was thinking to start meddling with it only if nobody else was but of course I would rather see someone experienced like you working on this
Meanwhile it's good to see what reference material we can pull out though, see if we can work around not having the full film on 35mm. I can do some tests on my own but I think everyone would feel safer not delegating this to a total noob like me ahah

The first DCP I ever saw was Blade Runner:The Final Cut when it first came out, didn't realise it was a digital presentation until I got there (this was before the big digital roll-out). I remember asking the manager if digital was that much better and he said 'oh yeah, in fact watching Blade Runner first will spoil you for anything else' and to be fair he was probably right, it was incredible.

The German VCL DVD has a very similar color timing as well. It's directly sourced from a release print.

Again and again, I tried to pass on the info of T2 opening scenes color grading which were all blue in the theaters, and modified for the LD/DVD/Blu.
Here's further proof: actual report from 1991 with excerpts, showing the biker scene is Blue, just like I remembered it ! http://www.ina.fr/video/CAB91052605 Also I might add, this site also as some Titanic reports, all the excerpts look teal, just like the recent remaster... This internet revisionism from people who think the early videos color grading is correct should stop. |
