[Help] The Keep (Michael Mann, 1983) – 35mm Scan

Currently, that's the plan. I got the okay for the application of FilmGuard on the print before scanning, which will tack on an extra $75, so I'm hoping to see if I can get that from the handful of folks who pledged but haven't paid yet.

Side note, for those of you who are unaware of what FilmGuard is, it basically rinses off a print.

Sorry for the double post, but...

Thank you, everyone, for your contributions! Thankfully due to a surprise jump in pledges recently, I've ended up with a bit of extra cash exceeding the original goal and after a bit of conferring with my contact, he was able to offer me the service of having the film be cleaned with FilmGuard with some of that extra funding (which I hope will greatly benefit the already supposedly decent print having been told it merely suffers from "some dirt speckles and some light occasional wear for sure here and there").

Anyways, I have just sent over the funds to him so he can rent out, rinse and scan the print, so at this point, all we can do now is wait for a status update I suppose.

As for the few who have pledged and yet to donate (a member from a different forum & a supporter on Facebook), I'll be contacting them about it to see what they want to with the funding, whether it'd be to funnel into another scan that was initially on the list of movies (Big Trouble In Little China was the second-place runner-up in that StrawPoll from a bit back, and since I also know an IRL friend who'd be willing to chip in on that, I may look into starting a new thread on that soon enough) I plan to tackle or simply just rescind.

So anyway, once again, thank you all!

I just got an update on the shipping situation.

Quote:I was just informed that The Keep will be shipped to the scanner no later than Tuesday 26th. It will go via Fed Ex and will probably be there the next day.

So good news everyone! Although I've unfortunately yet to get scan previews back yet, I have gotten word that along with the feature film, we will also be getting a fresh 4K scan of a 35mm trailer from the same collector source who apparently had one in storage along with the movie!

Quote:Bonus Feature: The scanner has a 35mm trailer for The Keep, so we'll throw that in too...

Hopefully though, we should be able to get the preview soon enough though. Right now the scanner is working on scanning a different feature print for someone else's preservation, so once that's done (if it isn't already), he should be looking into getting The Keep done afterwards.

In the meantime, I've managed to sync up HippieDalek's bit-perfect LD audio to the HDTV master (which I plan on using to patch up any possible missing frames). I also have been in cahoots with TomArrow recently and thanks to his Dolby Decoder, in theory, we might be able to provide a 4-track mix to the movie from the optical audio once I get my hands on that.

The HDTV master is just the LD upscaled right?

Yeah. Sort of an "All Roads Lead To Rome" situation with that movie where practically everything stems from some old LD master. I used the HDTV one specifically since I already had it ready for a regrade I was working on before I actually got the opportunity to do this.

It's not exactly the same as the LD, as the LD displays some of the worst rainbow artefacts I've ever seen on the format, which thankfully can't be seen on the HDTV. It's probably the same master through.

Thanks for all the hard work on this, LucasGodzilla, I'm really looking forward to this.
Program material is recorded on the other side of this disc...

The audio stuff in particular has provoked an unspeakable response in my figurative undergarments.

Can't wait. But must!

I just like to make an update: It seems the scanner is going to be getting around to scanning the print sometime soon. I've just received a picture of the first reel today as a tease.

Already it looks far better than the LD master!

Looks like a lovely print. I saw this a couple of years ago on 35mm and it looked gorgeous.
