[Help] The Keep (Michael Mann, 1983) – 35mm Scan
#41
So far no specific one afaik, possibly some that are on the leaders occasionally. But I've sent a Silverfast IT-8 target to him. Sadly the mail is very slow atm, especially intercontinentally, but it should get there eventually I think.

This looks incredible!
I recently bought the Australian R4 DVD and that looks pretty great for what it is but this is going to blow that out of the water! Thank you for doing this and everyone who contributed!

Hi all,

I'm Alex Kuciw, one of the producers of A World War II Fairytale, the documentary about Michael Mann and his making of The Keep. Lucas suggested that I post on this forum as I missed the opportunity to contribute to his fund to scan a 35mm print of the film.

I know some of you who gave funds to Lucas also gave to our crowdfund in the past. What I'm hoping to do, and only with your permission, is to use this scan of the print to pull selected scenes from the movie to use in our documentary. As we missed contributing initially, I'm suggesting reimbursing half of what each of the contributors on this forum gave to Lucas in order for access to this material.

I would love to use Lucas' restoration work and credit him appropriately, but this would depend on his timetable and ours matching up, which I truly hope they do. Currently I'm on track to have a first pass of the entire documentary by this November and we'll know at that point which scenes we'd need.

I'm new to the forums (is it obvious?), but I'd really love your help if you all so choose.

Thanks so very much.

I can't speak for @LucasGodzilla but as someone who donated to the project I'm fine with you using the footage, @koochew. I've been loosely following the production of your documentary and I've been looking forward to it. Having actual HD footage of the film to show will be a real bonus.
Program material is recorded on the other side of this disc...

Hello everyone, so it's been a bit since I last updated the thread here, so I thought I'd fix that.

First things first, I wanted to address that the scanner has been a bit pre-occupied lately and hasn't gotten around to scanning past the first reel yet, but I was assured that'll change soon enough. The reason why he was busy was that he was updating his gear set-up in order to make a couple of changes: From the installation of new addons like a proper film gate to prevent light leaks, a Dolby optical decoder, and a new bulb to get sharper, less noisy images from the camera. The chap has also stated that, thankfully, he'll rescan the first reel to accommodate for this change.

In other news pertinent to the project, I've altered the project to make use of the ViaVision DVD rather than the HDTV for a couple of reasons. Mainly there were some weird framerate issues that came up when trying to sync up the old preview of the first reel that seemed to be resultant of the HDTV master and is mostly fixed having made the swap. Nothing to really worry about though I think since I'll be making minimal use of it hopefully.

I've also found out the DVD audio is actually different than the LD audio provided by HippieDalek. It seems to me that some sort of automated leveling has been applied to the mix to fix some of the issues the poor audio mix the movie's suffered from over the years with nearly inaudible dialog at times.

Along with that, I've gotten my hands on a German dub and English subtitles and synced them up to the project.

Furtherly, I've been experimenting a bit with PFClean on the aforementioned outdated preview.

Results aren't perfect, but I can at least say I have a general grasp at how the software works now. I certainly both do and don't look forward to the challenge in the coming future when I finally get back my hard drive with the 4K scans.

BUT ANYWHO, that's all I have to say really atm. Just wanted to assure folks here I suppose
