Is the LotR 4K remaster a failure?
#11
So in terms of the extended versions, which is considered the best release to get? Has anyone tried taking the blus and regrading them to remove the green tint?

The LOTR UHD BDs are upscales from the 2k masters plus extra DNR, a ton of sharpening, and a regrade in HDR. Don't waste your money.

Sorry, but it's not that one-sided. Where the UHD looks fine, it does look fine (even upscaled 2K can and should look great in 4K). But yeah, it's far from being an ultimate release. So I would say grab them when it's twice as cheaper and make up your own mind Smile

The situation's one-sided as far as I'm concerned.  This is the best review so far in terms of providing details about the damage that has been done.

We're not talking about straight upscales, which might indeed have looked better.

It really isn't as straight-forward as that. I much prefer the new colour grade and enjoy the HDR. The DNR is no worse than on the theatrical BDs. Perhaps if you're into the EEs then it's a tougher choice but the theatrical UHDs are well worth the upgrade.

Yes. @44rh1n did this for Fellowship and it's great. https://fanrestore.com/thread-2239.html

My go-to versions are:

FOTR: the good HDTV cap (no green tint)
TTT & ROTK: EE BDs (region A, for the hard subtitles)

This leaves me with the TC for FOTR and the EEs for the other two, but given that this is the only way to have good HD versions, I'm prepared to shrug my shoulders when it comes to which cut to watch. (The TC BDs were undeniably a train wreck.) The HDR regrade is hit and miss.

Wait, are the region A ones different from the region B ones in this respect, somehow?

I guess that for any casual viewer and/or someone who has not the Blu-ray, it could be "reasonably good"... still, watching the caps-a-holic comparison, despite (as noted by Tom) the lack of clipped highlight, a subjectively (hence, questionable) better (different for sure, still quite similar to HDTV/WEB versions) color grading and few instances of higher resolution, I don't see the point to spend 90 bucks to get only that...

Blu-ray.com may have given it a favorable review, but the official thread for the 4K release on the blu-ray.com forum, which currently sits at 1M views tells a different story. In fact, after a month-long discussion, novice and expert members alike came to the conclusion that this is a 2K upscale, with more DNR, EE and a new revisionist color grading to match the digital look of the Hobbit. This came as a surprise, because prior to release, major reviewers (a.k.a brand affiliates) outright stated that this is a new 4K scan of the 35mm negative, but no official press release ever made such a claim. The discussion became so heated that blu-ray com had to amend their original review to reflect these concerns (not sure whether they changed the score though).

Speaking of LOTR, has there ever been a UAR "amblilight" version here on the forum that combines the BD, HDTV and FS DVD footage?

Again, this is a bit one-sided. I think FOTR's theatrical version in 4K is a deffinite improvement over the blu ray. I also prefer the colors of the extended cut on the UHD. Also, concerning additional DNR and EE, the first film was the least affected. I am still going through TTT and ROTK, so I can't say which one I prefer - just yet. One thing for sure - beginning of TTT is just horribly DNR'd, infortunately...
