I'm not using that method, and rented versions are 1:1 downloaded, not streamed. I get the 1080s saved locally to my hdd w/ no issues in quality

What I mean is, are you talking about the rented 1080's 5mbps crappy ones which the usual paid ripping tools get or the much higher quality hidden 10mbps (sometimes only 6/7mbps depending on title) which are meant for streaming only that can only be downloaded and decrypted the secret way using L1. Color me surprised and thankful if you can get the rented higher quality ones without issue at the moment, iTunes changed something a while back. Purchased ones don't seem to have issue.
Here is an example (from manifest) of a better streaming quality one I purchased:
BANDWIDTH=10094806,_AVG-BANDWIDTH=10094806,BANDWIDTH=14690052,VIDEO-RANGE=SDR,CLOSED-CAPTIONS="cc",CODECS="avc1.640028,mp4a.40.2"
And here is what those crappy ripping tools (and other older methods) can only grab:
BANDWIDTH=5240492,_AVG-BANDWIDTH=5240492,BANDWIDTH=8143765,VIDEO-RANGE=SDR,CLOSED-CAPTIONS="cc",CODECS="avc1.640028,mp4a.40.2"

please explain how you have successfully downloaded the hypothetical 10mbp/s iTunes stream of a 1080 movie using this method, since iTunes automatically downloads 1:1 the only 1080p copy they have resident on their server.
I'm not talking about: Netflix, Prime, HBOMax, etc.
iTunes only and specifically.
The size of this movie is the same size as a purchased copy.

iTunes/AppleTV+ does not only have one copy of each resolution on their servers and its certainly not hypothetical, they have numerous different bitrate versions between very low ones and the highest been 10mbps (1080p, 4k much higher) so depending on your device, bandwidth etc it will stream whichever version it determines you need (same as Netflix, Prime etc). If you know how to get the m3u8 manifest playlist like you say you did, I'm surprised your even questioning it as that shows all the different resolutions/bandwidths that are available (again, same as Netflix, Prime etc). The paid ripping tools and most methods can only grab the 5mbps version as it is limited to that on a pc. You need knowledge of coding, api's etc (again same as Netflix, Prime etc) and L1 device cdm to get these higher 1080p versions as well as 4k, or like myself, friends that do have L1. Research is your friend, no one is going to just tell you how to do it.
Here is a one example of a 10mbps iTunes 1080p version I have, Rough Cut (1980), which normal ripping methods would only grab 5mbps version:

so show me how to get the higher version of this file, and tell me why its offering only a 4GB version, when I've downloaded 6-9 GB versions before for other movies.
I've not even tried to stream it yet.. so it doesn't know what my top (or sustained) speed is even capable of (yet), but this is what it displays:
Actually, I'd like you to go to the page and find the higher bitrate version for me please.
Thanks for the assist

You are showing what a pc browser/app is allowing you to see and available for download which is the 5mbps version. The higher bitrate versions I am talking about are meant for streaming to certain devices only and need python coding/device trickery to get. Just stick with that version. If I get time later I will grab the playlist bitrate manifest for it and that will show whether there is a 10mbps version anyway.

Here is the playlist manifest for Superman ii:
https://play.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects...=en&aec=HD
The 10 mbps streaming version (average bitrate of 7 which peaks at over 10):
BANDWIDTH=7074449,_AVG-BANDWIDTH=7074449,BANDWIDTH=10796743,VIDEO-RANGE=SDR,CLOSED-CAPTIONS="cc",CODECS="ac-3,avc1.640028",AUDIO="audio-ac3_vod-ak-amt.tv.apple.com",SUBTITLES="subtitles_vod-ak-amt.tv.apple.com",FRAME-RATE=23.976,HDCP-LEVEL=TYPE-0,RESOLUTION=1910x814
Average/Overall bitrate is lower than Rough Cut due to aspect ratio been scope and not including the black bars as part of the encode:
The video file alone is 5.93gb, not including audio when downloaded.
You would need L1 cdm to start decryption procedure and as far as I am aware need to purchase file as rented versions have issues at moment.
Have you had time to check whether it is the older hd master yet.

It is the older HD master:
As I said to Booshman,
As soon as iTunes finishes downloading the entire thing, there's an error message.
It's something about it thinking I do not have a HDCP (copy protection) monitor connected (I do).
The error message is saying if I want to download it, I'll have to do the 720p copy.
That's not acceptable; I've been able to download and remove-DRM 1080's in the past..so I don't know what's changed.
I've got like 24 hours left to figure this out.
worse comes to worse we can purchase it and try the L1-cdm decryption procedure, but Booshman will have to decide.
Any thoughts let us know..

As you are only getting the usual iTunes download, can't you just download it with 12.6 and use Tuneskit to remove the DRM, only issue with that is the sound will be re-encoded but I assume you will sync other soundtracks to it anyway so not really a problem. How are you removing the DRM afterwards, not just screen recording I hope, as not sure why you would be getting hdcp error at end by just downloading otherwise. I assume if you continue to have issues and you decide to go down the L1 decryption route you actually have an L1 cdm.
By the way has anyone managed to check the Amazon version to see which master that is as the quality will be alot better than iTunes and can be easily grabbed if so without hassle, can't check myself as it is only available for rental/purchase in US/UK. Based on the little preview box, looks like older master, but that's not a guarantee the actual full version is.

yes, I'm only getting the usual iTunes download.
I've uninstalled, re-installed, rebooted, trying various iterations of iTunes 12, and they all can stream the 1080, but as soon as its downloaded to my disk, I get an error message and it will not play.
No, I've not screen-recorded anything nor would I.
I do not have an L1 cdm.
If I could get my hands on the encrypted DRM-version saved to my HDD, I could crack the encryption and save us a DMR-free 1080 copy.
update: Amazon version IS the older master, but! its not @ 2.39:1, its full-frame (open matte? cropped? I don't know the movie well enough to tell). It expands out to letterbox for the credits then goes back to fullscreen
