We Are The Walking Dead (Mini-Series) FANedit

Don't worry, I think there's no point on leaving the text with a flicker. It would draw too much attention.

What do you think of what I told you about adding some camp footage before Rick arrives, to avoid the abrupt cuts you have now?

I think the extra languajes is a good idea, BUT it can also be too much time consuming and can make you get tired of the project at some point.

So, going back to the PNGs, I took a different approach to the "problem". I erased the original text, leaving a "clean" background, and then I layered a replica of the original text (adding your name) where it should be. The worst part is that I had to do this 36 times. LOL. Here's the result (you should convert it to video to see if it moves smoothly. Tell me if there are any glitches (possibly)): https://mega.co.nz/#!cEo0kCJL!7nJsi39Ct_..._yC5u-apUk

Oh, I forgot.

Where did you take the spanish audio track from? The spanish dub of Spain is not the same as the one used in America.

If the PNGs work, please show us the full credit sequence at 1080p. Big Grin

I was trying to avoid adding any footage without Rick in the first film, but I agree with you that this scene should be added for two reasons:
a) It will solve the problem of the abrupt cut
b) As the story progresses, I will be focusing on Daryl and Glen as well, and since this scene involves Glen, I think it's okay to add it in BUT it will be a severely edited/cut-down version of that scene to minimum. It will just be there to help solve the problem of the abrupt cut-in that there was before.

Audio is my passion and I have gotten pretty good at syncing foreign tracks over the years. Granted, this is the first time I'm trying to custom cut foreign audio for a fanedit, but I think it can be done pretty easily and actually shouldn't take me that long to complete. As far as the Spanish audio track is concerned, I am aware of the fact that there is a Spanish Castellano version and a Spanish Latino version. The source for my Spanish dub are the PAL R2 Spanish DVD sets. I did some research as to which dub was better and most Spanish-speakers prefer the Castellano over the Latino dub.

Now, I was saving the best for lastWink WOW!!!!!!!! The text looks fantastic and there are no glitches. I checked by viewing the images on my 1080p 52" HDTV and you did a marvelous job. Smile Seriously, thank you!

It's late here, nearly 5am, and I need to get a little sleep. When I wake up, I will re-watch the last 1080p encode, make sure I have all timecodes listed in my notes, double-check that those edits have been made... then, I will work on the "Glen at camp before truck shows up" scene and a couple of other last-minute "touch-ups." Once this is complete, it's time to wait 30 hours just for the video to render :-/

I will encode, just the intro sequence, when I wake up in the "morning" and show you how it looks in full 1080pWink

YAY!!! That's for the camp recut and of course for the OK to the credits! Big Grin

I was worried that maybe something could be noticed in the background or maybe the text wasn't correctly positioned on one or 2 frames, but is seems it's OK. The real test will be when it's rendered and with the added grain. I'm glad all that photoshopping wasn't a waste of time in the end. Smile

Great for that castellano track! Wink

Sorry I haven't responded sooner but I have had some family stuff going on that has consumed most of my time the last few days.

I finally got a chance to re-watch the last 1080p encode, discovered a few more minor issues with audio transitions and a few more scenes that need a grain level adjustment, and have finally started editing everything.

One of the first things I noticed when working on the intro, is the timing of the "WE" and "WE ARE" was off compared to the timing of "DEAD" and "WALKING DEAD" showing up on-screen. What I mean by this is that the "DEAD" part is on-screen for 8 frames (plus one of a fade-in) before "WALKING" appears on-screen, but I only had 9 frames for "WE" and "WE ARE" before "DEAD" shows up on screen, which basically means less than half (especially including the one frame fade-in) of frames available to work with. In essence, this means that the "custom" parts there are "playing at double-speed" compared to the original. So I re-worked that entire sequence so the timing of it all is the same. Now the "WE" "WE ARE" "WE ARE DEAD" "WE ARE WALKING DEAD" is all 8 frames (plus one fade-in) EACH. This also means that "THE" had to be moved to a later frame than is in the original by 6 frames total. Now the entire sequence "flows" smoother as the timing of it all is the same and, interestingly, it matches the intro theme a lot better. Hope this explanation isn't too confusing, LOL

Anyway, since I am a few days behind on this project now (as, originally, I would have already had the entire film rendered in 1080p) I hope you don't mind waiting a couple of days (the time it will take for me to finish the last edits + the encoding time) before you get a chance to see the intro sequence, but I really don't want to delay this any moreWink

When watching the last 1080p encode, there were a couple more issues I noticed that I feel need to be mentioned:

-First, in the scene where Rick and Glen first get into the truck, Rick looks behind him when reversing the truck which is a technical "goof" and has been pointed out in numerous TWD forums, as well as IMDB (under "goofs" section.) Unless the back of the truck was open (which it isn't until Rick pulls up to the building) he would have been looking at... well, that's the problem... The back of the truck is closed, so he wouldn't be able to see what's behind him by looking that way, instead, he should have been looking into the rear-view mirrors. So, to fix this, I will be cutting that 2-second shot out and, hopefully, this will not cause audio issues

-Second, (and third) is during the explosion scene at the CDC. This is just an "honorable" mention, as I don't think I will be able to fix this easily. These I will "explain" with the use of screenshots...

In the following frame, we see the window, where Rick threw the grenade, exploding:

In the following frame, we see chunks of broken glass on the bottom:

In the following frame, when Dale and Andrea are jumping out the same window, we still see that broken glass on bottom:

In the following frame, when we see the "fire ball" in the same window, the broken pieces of glass "magically" disappear (and we know it's the same window because of the building reflecting to the left of screen):

In the following frame, we see all the windows break and the "fire ball" getting bigger:

In the following frame, which is the first one after we see the "fire ball" of the previous screenshot, we do NOT see a "fire ball" to the left, which we just saw in the previous shot and that makes no sense since fire is naturally drawn towards oxygen (i.e. the already broken window; where I'm not implying that the window on-screen wouldn't have exploded too, just that the position of the "fire ball" makes no sense):

In the following frame, we see the bush in the background (same one as the bush in the shot of Dale and Andrea jumping out of the broken window) so we know that it's not a "goof" of them showing the same window, but a goof of directionality of the "fire ball:"

The ONLY way that this could be fixed, is if the visual effect of that "fire ball" was re-done to show the "fire ball" coming from the left side of screen (where the already broken window is and where we just saw the first explosion) The issue with the broken glass "magically" disappearing could probably be fixed easier by layering in the broken glass from the earlier shot. But here's where my question comes: Is it really that important? I have searched numerous TWD forums and have only found one other person that has ever noticed this.

There is another continuity problem in the show that can NOT be fixed, but I think also deserves an "honorable" mention and has been pointed out on numerous TWD forums, as well as the "goofs" section on IMDB. Here, I'm talking about the issue of Rick's bandages. LOL. Ok, so in the beginning of the movie we CLEARLY see Rick get shot in the upper back, with the exit wound ABOVE his heart (we even see Shane applying pressure to the wound) BUT in EVERY shot of Rick from the hospital and forward, the bandage is clearly BELOW his heart, kind of in his upper-left stomach area.

Anyway, now I'm going back to editing everything but will wait to start the rendering until I hear a response as to whether to try to fix the "broken glass" issue and the "fire ball" directionality issueWink

I thought something personal happened when you didn't appear here, but then spoRv was missing too and I thought everybody had better things to do at the weekend than me. LOL.

Glass and fire ball: Way TOO MUCH work to fix an error that is hardly noticeable. Leave it as is.

Title: When I added the WE ARE, I already noticed the words fitted with the sound quite fine, funny because in the original the screen is "black" and the "words appearing" sound has no sense there.

Given that you had to rework the whole title, what do you think of making the words appear in order? I mean, make WALKING appear before DEAD, so the words would appear: WE... ARE... THE... WALKING... DEAD. Don't know why they did it the other way, but there's no need of mantaining it like that. Unless you like is as is.

Yeah, it's been a crazy few days and, honestly, I wish I could have spent my weekend like you, LOLWink

Glass and fire ball issue: Ok, so I am too much of a perfectionist Smile If you think it's not noticeable (which is true with most, as I stated earlier I have only found ONE reference to it online, besides my observation and noting it here) then I will leave it as-is.

Title: yeah, I always thought the sound did not match the title appearing on-screen but after I re-did it for the custom title, now it matches Big Grin

I see what you are saying about making the title appear in order and I never understood why it appears out-of-order in the original BUT...
for my custom title, I kind of like it and here's why: It now appears in this order... WE... ARE... THE... DEAD... and then "WALKING" is last like in the original. I kind of like the "double" title here of "We are the Dead" and "We are the Walking Dead" and for it to just say "We are the walking" before "dead" appears just sound weird to me but "we are the dead" still works so in this case I think I can leave it alone. Or is it just me?

No, it's not just you. I also thought We Are The Dead was a bonus metaphore, intended or not. Is only that I thought you could change it since you were editing it anyway, but it also works as it is. Wink

Well, it took me all freakin day and half the night to make most of the edits necessary... there were a total of 80 (!) timecodes (ranging from a 1 second shot to 2-3minutes) that needed an adjustment on level of grain (either "slight" or "heavy")

Finally got the intro re-timed and properly put together with the custom title (which I already mentioned in previous post)...

Added extra credits at the end of film...

There are still a few spots that I have to check for audio (as transitions/lengths/types of crossfade are different on ch3 vs rest of channels)

re-cut the glen arriving at camp scene (although heavily abridged) and still need to recheck audio transitions here as well...

three more timecodes I need to check on last 1080p encode for grain levels because my notes were not clear enough (must have been tired when I wrote it down)...

By the end of the day, I will finish the rest of the editing and, hopefully, begin the FINAL rendering of the 1080p "master" videoWink

TECHNICAL QUESTION:

At 01:36:01, I think I found a technical goof in the original source and here's why: during the "walkers attacking camp" scene ALL gunshots are present on the center channel OR on ALL channels (with the exception of some shots being present more/less in the LFE) and this is the ONLY gunshot that is panned to the FRONT LEFT channel ONLY. I understand that with "directionality" being an issue, that this was panned towards the left speaker but I think it should have been front+rear and because there is music heavily present in that front left channel, I can't simply copy/paste the SFX into the rear left...
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Here's a screenshot of, roughly, where the SFX issue occurs:

If it's too complicated leave it as is.

Could you send the new "glen arriving at camp" scene in low quality before rendering the final master?

Yeah, sure. I'm going through that last 1080p encode and making my notes for the grain level adjustments right now. Then, I have to fix all the audio issues that are still present (half of them are during the "glen arriving at camp" scene)
Once I have fixed all of that, I can do a quick SD encode of that scene for you. It was a huge pain in the a** to re-insert. First off, originally I wanted to exclude Shane from the scene all together and let it be a surprise to the viewer (as much as it is to Rick) to see him there but this is IMPOSSIBLE to do with the footage available. So I thought, "Ok, screw it. That's not Rick's family and seeing Shane doesn't give anything away to the viewer about Lori/Carl." BUT Lori/Carl are present during the "glen arriving at camp" scene and I had to heavily edit the scene to make sure that they are NOT on-screen before Rick sees them. I actually caught a couple of shots that were in previous version, where I forgot to crop them out, which I also have to fix when finishing the edits today.

If you don't care about rough transitions, I can encode the scene "as-is" now, but keep in mind that it is NOT finished yet and is a very rough draftWink
