Remember how Quentin Tarantino originally intended to make his feature film debut, Reservoir Dogs, using black and white 16mm stock? Well, for another early project, I plan on restoring the film in accordance with his original low-budget vision. Obviously, this restoration will use Carolco logos as seen on early trailers. Preliminary specs are as follows:
VIDEO
Resolution: 1080p (BD), 480p (NTSC DVD), 576p (PAL DVD)
Aspect ratio: 1.37:1, 2.35:1, and 1.78:1
AUDIO
English (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
English (6-track: left, left-center, center, right-center, right, and surround)
French (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
German (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Italian (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Castilian Spanish (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Turkish (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Brazilian Portuguese (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Hungarian (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Mexican Spanish (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)
Venezuelan Spanish (Dolby Stereo SR 4.0: left, center, right, and surround)

The above spec list is not final, which is most true for the subtitles; I might have to drop some of the subtitle options, ultimately, and I have no illusions that I'll be able to get everything I want for this project. But I'll do my darnedest with what I do have.

This one might not gain much interest, but I watched this movie as a kid and have been looking for the English version for a while. There have been several productions of Heidi over the years, but this particular production, directed by Werner Jacobs, has always been a favorite.
This was West German production, it has been released on DVD, but only with German audio and no English subtitles. However, there is an English dub out there. It was picked up by Warner Bros - Seven Arts and released in the US dubbed in English in 1967. I think it had a limited run in theaters, and later aired on TV in the 80s.
I found a TV broadcast VHS recording from the late 80s (88 or 89) with the English audio, however it had significant hissing and buzz. It is also missing a couple minutes in the middle of the film where someone recorded over part of the movie.
I have also acquired one of the German DVDs. It seems there is a 2003 DVD and a 2007 DVD. One has a run time of 91 minutes, while the other has a runtime of 87 minutes, which has a couple short scenes cut. I have the 87 minute DVD from 2007 but have not verified the VHS runtime without commercials.
My goal for the project is to clean-up and sync the English dub with a rip of the German DVD, which offers much better picture quality than the VHS. It would also be nice to create English subtitles.
If anyone happens to have the 91 minute DVD, that would be a help. If by some chance someone has access to a better copy of the English audio that would also be a huge help.
I thought the price ($600) seemed quite fair for a classic movie like this on 35mm, in apparently good state. Open Matte, colors look decent and not faded (although hard to tell from the pictures).
I'm poor like a Kirchenmaus (as we say in Germany), but I thought someone might care. Also posted it on OT.
Do we have any thread or subforum to post finds like these to, though? I see interesting 35mm prints every now and then and I'm starting to feel like I'm cluttering the forum with my posts about it, maybe a dedicated place for this would be nice?
As suggested by spoRv, this thread is dedicated to trying to get a hold of the World Trade Center Spider Man trailer, as it has a scene/sequence found nowhere else, and scanning it.
I have contacted the seller and he agreed to wait with payment until next month, so I will be buying it. Ergo, please don't bid on it, or someone's money will be wasted.
Sadly, the price is insane ($300). If anyone has (or is) a rich uncle with a tendency to impulsive spending, this is for you. Or maybe enough people are interested to add something to the pot?
Though, my hope is to get the German one, which should be possible, as it's kind of a niche, despite the rarity.
In either case, scanning will be required. Is anyone here able and willing to do this? If I dish out 60 EUR for a trailer, my budget will be overextended anyway, so I sadly can't contribute much.
I could theoretically scan it frame by frame with my Reflecta ProScan 7200, but by my calculations, it would take me 2 weeks of non stop work without sleep, and frankly I'm not that disciplined or motivated. Nor do I have the hard drive space. Nor the patience to restart if I realize I've had some faulty settings.
Preferably, for the German one, someone in Europe should do the scanning, to keep the shipping costs in a reasonable range.
I propose here to switch from veryslow preset to medium, retaining 99.7% of its quality and cut in half the encoding time (according to this page); I took previous settings found here, and added only --ref 4 to maintain BD compliance, and --direct auto to improve quality.
Of course, 0.3% of quality loss and encoding time cut in half would apply only to plain presets (i.e. without messing with other settings); if the encoding time will be only slightly reduced, there will be no need to use these settings; so, some tests are needed - volunteers are welcome!
replace 25000 with the desired average bitrate, 24 in the keyint with the video framerate (24 would do for 23.976 and 30 for 29.97), Input_File.avs with an AviSynth script (or a video file), and Output_File.264 with the final x264 file.
You can use them directly with the x264 command line - just copy and paste pass 1 settings then, when finished, copy and paste pass2 settings - or save as .bat file
HINTS:
these settings are good for 1080p video
pay attention to the BD size: actual ones are 23.3GB for BD-25 and 46.6GB for BD-50
allow about 7% overhead for the .m2ts container - for example, total file size (video+audio+subs) excluding eventual menus would be around 21.75GB for a BD-25, and 43.55 for a BD-50
to retain grain, better to not go under 20/22mbps for 2.35:1 and 28/30mbps for 1.78:1/1.85:1
max bitrate allowed for BD (video+audio) is 48000mbps, so if audio tracks total bitrate is over 8000mbps, you should lower video bitrate accordingly, in particular pay attention to --vbv-maxrate
to improve speed, you can use for pass 1 a "simpler" version of the final file, for example without noise reduction, grain plate, color grading, but it should be otherwise identical - same frame numbers, same resolution etc.
do NOT delete any temp files you get after pass 1 (.stats and .stats.mbtree) because they will be used by pass 2!!!
I am not sure whether this was only supposed to be in the trailer or whether it was an actual movie scene, either way, as we know, it has been removed. Does anyone here have it in good quality or know anything about it?
Just a curiosity of mine... actually, I watch almost always US movies - maybe, 90%? - probably due to the fact I love sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action films, genres not so prolific in Italy.
And, if you watch them, which genres, years, titles, directors, actors do you prefer?
(warning: anyone who writes "cinepanettoni" shall be shot! )
