| Blood Simple Regrade |

I decided to dig up my old PAL DVD of the theatrical cut of Blood Simple as well as my Blu-ray copy of the Director's Cut to compare the look and sound of both versions.
I was struck by how different the two versions look. The Blu-ray is far too bright and low-contrast, which kind of diminishes the noir feel of the film. The DVD is sourced from a print (there are cue marks at the reel changes), so I think it's safe to say it's more in line with how it looked theatrically.
Here are some screenshots:

I also compared a couple of shots from the trailer:

As you can see, the DVD and the trailer match almost exactly.

Here the trailer has slightly stronger blue tint than the DVD, but it's a much closer match than the Blu-ray.
The two sound mixes also sound drastically different. I feel it's kind of a similar situation as with The Terminator. The film originally had a charming lo-fi crummy sounding mono mix, but the Blu-ray has this new fancypants remix with an all new foley track. The DVD does have the original mix, but I would like to get my hands on the Laserdisc to sync the audio to the Blu-ray.
So, what do you guys think? Anyone here who would like to see this regrade?

Hello!
I'm Charles Daniels.
I have been involved with hunting down missing television and reconstructing missing episodes of Doctor Who.
I have found many missing programmes from the early 70s on n1500 tapes.
I have also worked on teams re-creating missing TV from the 60s.
I am also a film collector with special interest in items from the 50s to 80s
I collect flms relating to Dr Who, Peter Cushing, Spy Fi, B-movies, and whatever catches my eye really.

Does anyone here have Blood Simple on Laserdisc? It would be nice to have to original mono mix. I realise that the US LD replaced one of the songs due to rights issues (not sure about the Japanese LD, though), but I don't know if the mix was altered in any other way.

So, you know how Disney effectively release imitations of their animated features on Blu-ray? (see here) I've thought about it, and it's like... the damage is done at this point, you know? But there is a chance that some of the DNR can be reversed by adding fine grain to the transfer. If not, it'd at least restore that filmic look.
Would you say this looks about right?
Of course, this'd only really work for titles that aren't over-processed.

| Dolby matrixed audio on modern equipment |

Hi all, I recently purchased the Onkyo TXNR626 refurbed from A4L. It does everything perfectly...that is except all my prized LD 2.0 matrixed tracks, or even DVDs in 2.0 surround with flags.
When I engage DPLII cinema or NEO:6 there is consistent channel bleeding from the center to the rears, and despite having better low end Neo: 6 tries to create a phantom rear center which makes it less useable than PLII.
I tried my old outboard DPLI decoders which only output RCAs and they work fine-only trouble is that the Onkyo only has a digital input!
I also found that the unit picks up on the Dolby surround flags but apparently there is no mode that will play them nor a direct auto format sensing mode like on my nearly 20 year old Sony receiver.
I guess I've got to go round with an SPL and set everything, but I just read that old DPL receivers actually cut power to the surrounds in PLI mode so that you got that proper center channel emphasis with only a minor emphasis on the mono rear.
Any suggestions? This is driving me nuts!
