Star Trek 2 The Wrath Of Khan Regrade (Paramount Widescreen Laserdisc v1.0)

Project Info:
This is part three in my series of laserdisc to Blu-ray regrades. Taking the color of the laserdisc and applying it to the HD of the BD. ST2 came up not because the new BD is bad, in fact it's excellent outside of being a little too dark, but because the colors of the LD were very different. The LD is very warm with oranges/red and greens but also much brighter making it a sometimes a more pleasing watch. Think of this as a fun alternative to the current BD.

Just like other LD regrades, I am going to reduce the saturation of the LD a bit and tweak the reds to be less blooming.

Note: This is theatrical cut only and will be in sync with the TC BD for adding additional soundtracks and subs

(I have several of these planned, regrade to LDs or DVDs where the soundtracks are already in sync but will re-focus on the projects I have to finish soundtrack syncing soon....and MM2)

Wow! This film is definitely in my top ten. Although I really like the look of the new BD, it's always good to have options. Nice job!

Pictures look great, except maybe for the one with the explosion; all that green and the flat highlights look a bit unnatural. Is that how the LD looks too?

Been wanting to rewatch this for a while anyway. Def. looking forward to it.

Agree with Tom; regrade got all better colors except in that green explosion screenshot... this is a complain not towards your work (you know that I know that you make great projects), but only to the laserdisc producers! said that, if both versions would be available on the shelves, I have no doubts which one I will get...

Thanks guys, yeah the shot is the same color but badly blown out on the LD but that was a test run, let me see what I can do

I'm more worry about the green tint than eventual blown up whites... I mean, why an explosion should be greenish, instead orange-ish? Is there same actual reason? (sorry, can't check the movie by myself now)

Another consideration: it is GREAT that you, and others, are using laserdisc as color reference for your projects... being the first to have started this trend with "The Thing" (I think/hope), I feel guilty and happy at the same time!

Never seen it, never really been interested in Star Trek, but PDB qualifying it a "submarine movie" has me intrigued. I like submarine movies. This is what I felt watching Fury, the inside-a-tank movie, too.

I saw the 70mm this year but sadly the print was not in the best condition so can’t add any real input.

Thanks for the heads up Bigrob. I doubt the LD is more accurate then the latest BD so I tend to think of it best as a fun alternative to the BD.

Was it red faded?

Submarine is of course a little tongue in cheek but it is an apt analogy.

I'd say outside of the JJ Abrams movies, Star Trek 2 is by far the most accessible of the Star Trek (ST) films. I think a lot of the love it gets is not only that it's a great ST film but a great film period.

Director Nicholas Meyer wasn't a ST fan so he dumped the usual ST troupes of God-like aliens, screwed-up societies or alien races that are stand ins for modern (or 60s era) concerns. What he did keep was the great character work and interactions. Beyond that, he focused on a man getting old; feeling that his usefulness is waning. But also a man that has won every battle, solved every puzzle, bedded every woman and never had to learn to lose, to sacrifice. That is until his past catches up.

I'm being vague as not to spoil the movie wholesale.

Meyers then added his love of naval motifs, Herman Melville, Horatio Hornblower and The Enemy Below (great movie btw). So in that, he kind of created the anti-Star Wars. In SW the ships are fast and nimble, reflecting Lucas' love for WW2 aerial battles. In ST2 the ships are large, slow moving and fight via broadsiding each other like classic wooden naval vessel.

The submarine part has to do with unlike sailing ships, these ships can move in 3 dimensions which has meaning in one of the battles and they also have "torpedoes" of a sort.

All-in-all it purposefully plays as a naval battle in space. So much to the degree that the foes never meet in person (much like Enemy Below).

I enjoyed Fury too. That tank battle was a corker. Sadly it did lose a little steam when the tank broke down towards the end.
