[Canceled] Terminator 2 Regrade (First Japanese Squeeze Laserdisc)
#11
Personally, I'd use the 2015 US BD release as a baseline for the project, as, while it used the older scan, had no DNR.

As for why the new UHD and remastered BDs are so DNR'd? I theorize it was done for the 3D conversion, but either the 2D base for that was used, or the team forgot to add a grain overlay to it. Again, just a theory.

That said, I really dig the colour grading. Nice work!

Agree totally, or do a grain pass?

The new Theatrical Cut says something about being a 3D Remaster at the beginning. It is not just a dnr... Somewhere, I think in one of the many threads on originaltrilogy.com it was shown that the movie got a computer remaster processing for the 3D conversion, and the 2D version just was done from that processed master. I don't think they forgot a grain layer... The team might have chosen do, because some people think that movie grain is... Very anti-uhd.

Not only that, the 4K is just the regular master upscaled. It offers no addition in detail.
Someone did a test by reducing the 4K to 1080p, then upscaling it: the detail is the same as the base 4K once uprezzed!

Plus differences in framing between the 2K and 4K. I would use only the 3D one eye version, though it's not the exact same film as the image is shifted a bit digitally.

I'm pretty much committed to using the new master. The DNR is awful and the master is way over sharpened and to even watch the new BD (not a regrade) I had to add grain and soften it a bit. But after all that, it still is a much better scan then the old BD. The old BD scan has got to be over 20 years old at this point.

I agree, I think the best option would be the left eye of the 3D as it's the only one where the window when Sarah turns is not blown out for example, nor does it have the green cast in some scenes.

Maybe it could be cool to perhaps alternate from the 2 sources, ie you can use the 3D only for problematic shots?

I put the 3D in Film Convert, and using Fujiifilm grain and color, it looks very filmic.
