Looking for the "right" Terminator 2 color grading...
#1
Time to start a proper thread about this...

Someone *thinks* that the first Japanese squeezed (read: anamorphic 16:9) version, PILF-2187 - does contain both theatrical audio mix AND color grading...

I explored the web and found some links about this edition (and comparisons with other releases as DVD, BD, and even MUSE LD!):

https://www.google.it/amp/s/blog.mercian...t-day/amp/
http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=2338

As you can see, the trailer (as usual, I could add) has totally different colors from any other versions; also the MUSE LD, as the PILF-2187 as well, while other laserdiscs, DVDs and BDs seems to have, more or less, the same grading... I must admit I like a lot the trailer colors (and the different takes, and unused shots too!) but it's difficult IMHO to use just few shots to regrade a whole movie; MUSE LD, apart some too green images (probably due to the MUSE standard itself) has nice natural colors; can't say which has the "proper" color grading!

A comment in the following page says that, even if PILF-2187 has a different color grading in comparison to any other sources (and it seems true, according to previous pages) and it *seems* almost no corrected in some scenes, it is not the same seen in 35mm:

About audio, I think the "original" CDS mix is present in one of the earliest versions on DVD; what about PILF-2187 audio mix?

Time to write your thoughts now!

I've done a ton of research into this here on fanres and the OT:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Loo...850/page/8
https://fanrestore.com/thread-588.html?h...rminator+2

The muse LD does come the closet in theatrical timing. For example, in my research it looks like the scenes at the mall (video game and hallway) should have a blue tint like the 8mm some 35mm prints and some 35mm boots I have seen.

Although I say closest since there is some conflicting information. For example, the canal chase has looked neutral in some media or green tinted in others (like this LD).

I'd love a cap of this LD so I can pick back up my T2 regrade

I'm trying to get a sample RIP with the analog mono audio (no equipment for more than stereo RIP, and it has just mono and multi channel tracks) online.

As the blogger says, the sound mix of this LD is the best sounding T2 ever, closest to the sound impact in the theaters.
Would love to see this soundtrack synced to the current Blu.

If it is that great, why there was never a bit perfect rip floating around?
I can't believe, that, if it is such a gem, it never was grabbed before...

Well, there were not so many people with laserdisc players around at the time (last millennium), not all had one with digital output, less with AC3 demodulator, even less with a bit-perfect audio card, and few with the skill to do the capture. Today reduce the number at maybe 5% of the peak reached in those years - don't know, let's say today few thousand persons around the world with a laserdisc player with digital output, an AC3 demodulator, a bit-perfect capture card, and the skill to do the capture - and time, and will to do so, and let it available online... how many of them have that laserdisc?!?

My offer is still valid: send me the laserdisc, and I will capture video and audio AC3 bit-perfect; then it will be available for everyone who would like to make a project! Ok

You only want my best.. and that is that LaserDisc... Smile

Let's see 2017 what we could do about that... Would be nice to have that version with all three audio options as mkv (and if it is just three mkv, one for each side...). Smile

According to the lddb page http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00140/PILF...dgment-Day there is a mono Track on the analog left, an Dolby Digital on analog right, and the digital track.
